Across The Universe
Lyrics
Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world x2
Jai guru deva
Jai guru deva
Jai guru deva om
This song has a mixed history and seems to exist in two distinct forms:
It was first recorded in 1967 and was in t running to be included as a possible side of a single ( In the end Lady Madonna was chosen)
This version was recorded using George Martin as the producer and Features Wild life affects at the beginning and fort the first time ever female backing vocals from two fans (Lizzy Bravo and Gayleen Pease) . This was given away by the Beatles to The World Wildlife Fund and appears on a charity issue of that name.
The second version is derived from this recording and is derived from this version but it has parts removed and has been slowed down to change both the key and feel of the song.
There are various versions available : one of which captures the real beauty of the song on the Ultra Rare Trax series and is just magical !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So what doe the lyrics mean?
This song comes from Johnâs time studying Transcendental meditation with The Maharishi in India.
He says that he woke up with the words
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me
Flowing through is mind. He decided to make a song of this and went to work.......................
Jai guru deva om
Plus or minus this means âGlory To The Devine Teacherâ This I think is a reference to the meditation techniques of the Maharishi..........it seems to be one of t he ways he started his meditation sessions
The Maharishiâs organization is concerned with cosmic conscientiousness and they have many references to enlightening the world to its true potential. They ae connected with natural products and their influences on people, they even have plans to show how buildings should be built and orientated to give the best affects
This could well be the influence behind this part of he song:
Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me
And
Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
The T M experience s supposed to empty the mind and allow you to focus on higher things ..........I feel that this is what John is tell us about here.
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe
I have visited the Maharishiâs residence in Vlordrop NL just down the way from where I live. It is situated in an old abbey which the former Monks made as serine as possible...............There are lakes , gardens and may wonderful natural features..................Lay lines converge here and the place has a cosmic connect...................IN the garden are things connect with looking at the heavens and studying the universe.............
Now Maharishi brought these ideas from his Indian Ashram , so i guess it had a similar feel so these lines make sense
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
and the nature sounds on the first version and maybe the effects on the aforementioned bootleg version.
There is a wonderful tranquility about he place which could make one feel that :
Nothing's gonna change my world
So guess we have a song which reflects John in a happy if not naive state trying to come to terms with life , the universe and everything................It was going o be a short live thing as a further song would show.

Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!
It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown..............................Chris Simpson ( "Mixed Up Sensations" 1975 Martin's Cafe )
