Deciphering The Beatles ......................Nineteen...............Ticket To Ride
Lyrics
I think I'm gonna be sad
I think it's today, yea
The girl whose driving me mad
Is going away.
Chorus:
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride, and she don't care
She said that living with me,
Was bringing her down, yea
She won't never be free,
When I was around.
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride, and she don't care
I don't know why she's riding so high
She ought to think twice,
she ought to do right, by me
Before she gets to saying good-bye
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right, by me.
I think I'm gonna be sad
I think it's today, yea
The girl who likes driving me mad
Is going away.
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride, and she don't care
I don't know why she's riding so high
She ought to think twice,
she ought to do right, by me
Before she gets to saying good-bye
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right, by me.
She said that living with me,
Was bringing her down, yea
She won't never be free,
When I was around.
My baby don't care
My baby don't care
My baby don't care
My baby don't care
My baby don't care
The Beatles in 1965 were riding high and has confirmed their place as more than an over night sensation. From a song writing point of view they had done all the she loves him , he loves her, I love etc.............They were starting to get more complex and rugs were beginning to play quite a big part.
This song has been looked at by many people and The Beatles for meaning and one or two cryptic clues have emerged............
Looking at the events in John and Paulâs lives points to some ideas.........It was John and Cynthia , never a happy relationship in Beatles days and John was a serial affairs person. Paul s with Jane Asher and there were cracks here too............I believe this gave both room for fantasy about another relationship............so here is a starting point for some ideas............
So . what is going on here? Well this is a move away from the early Lennon and McCartney song to a more reflective one. The subject is not just first person or second but more indirect. There is something of a daydream or fantasy here.
The idea of a ticket to ride? A double meaning certainly but as to what is not easy to define.
In an interview John suggests a basic meaning, going back to the days on The Reeperbahn in Hamburg. IN some countries prostitutes are checked every so often and given a clean bill of health or in Northern English working class terms â A Ticket To Ride â..................
However I donât feel this is the whole story here.
In the early days before the Beatles , John and Paul went on holidays together .................One such excursion took then to a pub . In this pub they had a good time that has been mentioned in several biographies.............They performed often as a duo ............The Nurk Twins and got on well with a few local girls. This venue as in Rhyde on the Isle Of Wight................Now a bit of careful song writers craft and a touch of talking about now in their lives and history might just give the ingredients for a cryptic inner Beatleâs circle for the references to a song. Puff in a few interesting ciggies and here you might have the meanings of this one.
The last point to look at is Jane and Paul, Paul and Jane seem to have been rather incompatible, Paul has been documented as saying to Jane that if they became a long term couple, he wanted her to give up her acting career and keep house for him. Jane would not do this and as time went on this became a rift between them. Jane was often out on tour with some play whilst Paul was home And so she could well have been the inspiration for the first verse or so:
I think I'm gonna be sad
I think it's today, yea
The girl whose driving me mad
Is going away.
She said that living with me,
Was bringing her down, yea
She won't never be free,
When I was around.
So , this could be Paulâs major contribution and influence. It was also said hat Paul was resentful of Janeâs success.... She has lasted as long in her career as he has in his:
I don't know why she's riding so high
She ought to think twice,
she ought to do right, by me
Before she gets to saying good-bye
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right, by me.
Actors in those days often travelled by rain and the promoters would give them a railway ticket to their destination when they gave them news of the job.
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride, and she don't care
Now, Jane though so strongly about going on with her career that she did split from Paul, so I guess that gives us the last part
My baby don't care
My baby don't care
My baby don't care
My baby don't care
My baby don't care

Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!
It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown..............................Chris Simpson ( "Mixed Up Sensations" 1975 Martin's Cafe )
