Decipering The Beatles……………..Good Morning Good Morning…………..Sixteen
Lyrics
Good morning good morning
good morning good morning
good morning, ah

Nothing to do to save his life
call his wife in
Nothing say but what a day
how's your boy been
Nothing to do, it's up to you
I've got nothing to say but it's O.K.

Good morning good morning
good morning a

Going to work don't want to go
feeling low down
Heading for home you start to roam
then you're in town

Everybody knows there's nothing doing
Everything is closed, it's like a ruin
Everyone you see is half asleep
And you're on your own, you're in the street

People running 'round it's five o'clock
Everywhere in town it's getting dark
Everyone you see is full of life
It's time for tea and meet the wife

Somebody needs to know the time
glad that I'm here
Watching the skirts you start to flirt
no you're in gear
Go to a show you hope she goes
I've got nothing to say but it's O.K.
Good morning good morning
good morning good morning

Around 1966 John was just technically married to Cynthia and was living in his mock Tudor mansion ”Kenwood” on the outskirts of the London stockbroker belt. Most days were spent in a summer house at the back of the house on a chase lange with the TV on in the background looking into the garden. It was probably in the position that John first started to look at the song “ Good Morning Good Morning”…………..Quite a few of his songs had had inspiration from the TV and this is documented as having a similar inspiration. The jingle went: "Good morning, good morning, The best to you each morning, Sunshine Breakfast, Kellogg's Corn Flakes, Crisp and full of fun".Thanks Wiki

The basic idea of the ad is that Good Morning slogan which gave Lennon his start. The cockerel which is the symbol for Kelloggs also plays a part in the song.

So, the opening is a simple lift from the ad

Good morning good morning
good morning good morning
good morning, ah

The next part is not so clear: Around this time The Beatles had stopped touring and John found that he had little to really focus on.....................It is possible that this comes out in the next part. There was also another possible motivation here..............The documentation says that after the Bigger Than Jesus episode.....John felt restricted about what he could speak out about. Since around the time of Help ! he had wanted to comment on several political matters but had been advised not to do so .So maybe this was at the back of his mind as he wrote this part. Especially the last line

Nothing to do to save his life
call his wife in
Nothing say but what a day
how's your boy been
Nothing to do, it's up to you
I've got nothing to say but it's O.K.

The earlier part seems to be a reflection on how John saw a traditional Northern couples marriage In many Northern households there were strong maternal figures and in John’s background he had seen them ( Mimi ! and others in the family.....................Later on in life John had said that he was impressed by strong maternal figures { Indeed he called Yoko “Mother “ ]) .

Looking at the song in wider terms: John’s marriage to Cynthia was in trouble: around this time, there are many photo’s of them trying to show domestic bliss....................John was clearly having affairs and documenting them as in “ Norwegian Wood “. Yoko was also on the horizon .Now if one looks at the song from the point of view of John looking at marriage and what it might mean to him add in a few drugs etc and an unhappy and uncertain man, the song starts to come into focus.

Going to work don't want to go
feeling low down
Heading for home you start to roam
then you're in town

So, John has put himself into character for he song, how might that character act......? Clearly he is in escapism mode and he puts the song into the mid ground of looking at someone else disguising it a bit and seeing how they might act.

He has moved the action on by changing the scene for the next part.............

Everybody knows there's nothing doing
Everything is closed, it's like a ruin
Everyone you see is half asleep
And you're on your own, you're in the street

So he paint the scenery for the next part or does he ?????????? Personally I feel that this looks like John summing up his personal situation.................

So what do you do next?

After a while you start to smile
now you feel cool
Then you decide to take a walk by the old school
Nothing has changed it's still the same
I've got nothing to say but it's O.K.
Good morning good morning
good morning a

The key here is the smile and feeling cool, John is preparing to step out and live. Is this out into the street or out of his marriage? I suggest by the timing of this he is rehearsing stepping out of his own marriage...........................HE is feeling anxious and the adrenaline flows...............You can tell because here both the pace of the music and lyrics speeds up.

There is a sly reference in here

It's time for tea and meet the wife

Meet the wife was along running domestic comedy program on the BBC . It stared Thora Hird and Freddy Frinton...........The action revolved around an ineffectual husband and a strong minded wife !

People running 'round it's five o'clock
Everywhere in town it's getting dark
Everyone you see is full of life
It's time for tea and meet the wife

So what does he hope will happen?

Somebody needs to know the time
glad that I'm here
Watching the skirts you start to flirt
no you're in gear
Go to a show you hope she goes
I've got nothing to say but it's O.K.
Good morning good morning
good morning good morning

The main line here is

Watching the skirts you start to flirt
no you're in gear
Go to a show you hope she goes

He has given himself the permission he wants to start an affair and he feels he has justified it with the earlier parts of the song.

There are also, some interesting points in the music:

The cockerel mentioned earlier .............I feel you can see that both George and Paul and perhaps John reworked the cockerels early morning call into the guitar parts as you can trace a musical impression of a cockerel’s movements in those licks. Even Ringo uses it in his drum patterns.

The end of the song is a typical John situation .............he enjoyed writing the early parts and even the middle but as is typical John he lost interest towards the end and could not be bothered to finish it.

In, come George Martin and Geoff Emerick to solve the problem...............The team come up with the idea of sound effects to segue the song into the next one. The feel of the song is The Cockerel , something typically English and there is plenty of activity. So the theme of the end ? A chase in which.

Lennon asked engineer Geoff Emerick to arrange the animal noises heard at beginning (and end) of the song so that each animal heard was one capable of devouring (or frightening) the animal preceding it.

The final sound effect of a chicken clucking was so placed that it transforms into the guitar on the following track, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)".Thanks Wiki !

Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

Amazing decipher, Gryph !!!.......thanks again for this !

I love the raunchy giutar solo by George ! I think this is my dog's favorite Beatle song...his ears perk up and he takes notice to the various animal sounds at the end !!!...lol

I've been listening to Sgt. Pepper a lot lately,,,maybe I'm yearning for nostalgia ! As I listen I focus in on the time it was released 44 years, three months ago and what the album would mean to listeners way back then !!!!
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!
