Deciphering The Beatles ..........Thirteen............Day Tripper
Got a good reason, for taking the easy way out
Got a good reason, for taking the easy way out, now
She was a day..... tripper, one way ticket, yeah!
It took me so..... long to find out, and I found out
She's a big teaser, she took me half the way there
She's a big teaser, she took me half the way there, now
She was a day.... tripper, one way ticket, yeah!
It took me so.... long to find out, and I found out
Tried to please her, she only played one night stands
Tried to please her, she only played one night stands, now
She was a day.... tripper, Sunday driver, yeah!
It took me so.... long to find out, and I found out
Day tripper
Day tripper, yeah!
Day tripper
Day tripper, yeah!
Around 1965 The Beatles had established themselves as song writers, John and Paul in particular had become what the Monkees would later call âThe ( four) Kings of EMIâ
By now they were pushing the limits strongly and taking large quantities of white powders..........
Strangely enough, they were not to write openly about the white powders until later , and then most people completely ignored the songâs true meaning .
Much of the meaning of the middle period songwriting lies âin â jokes and double or subtle meanings........in fact the Beatles like to tease people and make their minds do some of the interpretation.
Day tripper is one of these songs......................
The Title:
Everyone was waiting for the drugs based song ...........so The Beatles thought letâs tease them and make them think they have it !
A Day Tripper is an English phenomenon.......someone who take a day out, to the sea side or county etc
BUT it also sounds like the slang for a drugs trip or even sex...................so this is great ground or fun.
The song is written in the third person as are many mid Beatle period songs and this is fertile ground for innuendo !
Got a good reason, for taking the easy way out
Got a good reason, for taking the easy way out, now
Now this is double meaning ....................Trip out or drugs trip ?
Introduce a girl for interest and you have plenty of room to play..........
She was a day..... tripper, one way ticket, yeah!
It took me so..... long to find out, and I found out
Again did she introduce drugs or buy a ticket for a day out , an adventure ?
Was it a surprise what it a mystery your ( Popular at the time )?
They have got you thinking? And hatâs he key .....................This song is what you want it to be !
She's a big teaser, she took me half the way there
She's a big teaser, she took me half the way there, now
This was interesting people made of this what their minds suggested ...............
Was this a just a bit of fun?
Did she help the listener in some way ?
Did she offer the drugs ?
Now the story gets legs of itâs own...........one or two people decided to hear what they wanted to. ..........Liverpool accent................non too clear diction and it becomes..........
Sheâs a prick teaser !...................Draw your own conclusions...........
Now follow through and they have done it word play to complete full sexual innuendo !
Tried to please her, she only played one night stands
Tried to please her, she only played one night stands, now
For those who need it the trick is âone night standsâ UK colloculism for casual sex !
And yet is this really the meaning................probably not , he just bought a ticket to somewhere she would like...........and they might only spend 24hrs there!
She was a day.... tripper, Sunday driver, yeah!
It took me so.... long to find out, and I found out
This last part plays the game more..............A Sunday driver was a feature of the UK roads in the 60âs.........Someone who worked 9 to 5 Monday to Friday and then took to the roads on Sunday to take the family out................A naive driver or clever sexual code ? Take your pick !
So, is there context for these interpretations?
Look at the 1965 UK......................There were a set of unwashed people who you would not let your daughter near out there.................Yes The Rolling Stones..............or thatâs the way the starched UK press were portraying it..................The establishment was under attack and sexual liberation was underway...................
So what you see in the song is a clever snapshot which captures the mindset of the time.........Two points of view ............One for The Establishment .............so it gets played on the Radio and could be respectable and one for the hip kids who knew what was what !
Craftsman song writing at it's best !

Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!
It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown..............................Chris Simpson ( "Mixed Up Sensations" 1975 Martin's Cafe )
