Week Twelve Review........Cornershop.........Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast

This album seems to have been on and off the release schedules but as far as I can tell it was originally scheduled for release in 2009 but has only recently seem the light of day

So lets have a listen to Cornershop's fifth album and see what
Tjinder et al have to offer

Cornershop…………………………..Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast

Track One: Who Fingered Rock and Roll ? : If George Harrison ad ever wanted to guest on an album in 2010 then Cornershop could have been it and his instrument could have been a sitar…………………….Not an outstanding start to an album but it does have Cornershop’s trademark sound.
Track Two: Soul School..............bounces onto the scene and crates a nice little groove...pleasant but not addictive.
Track Three :Half Brick.............not sure what we intended to do here?
Track Four:Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast...................This is a little nearer what one might expect from Cornershop ............A nice pop groove even if it is a little weak on some fronts.Jif Ashya had a brimful then this a little more of a small feather in a cap..............
Track Five:Shut Southall Down : No comment!
Track Six: Free Love Bland and difficult to hear the lyrics.
Track Seven:The Roll Of Characteristics (or History In The Making ). Pleasant, but not outstanding ounded more like theme music for a five o clock TV show aimed at little kids.
Track Eight:Operation Push ...Indian reggae ! nice try and quite effective!
Track Nine: The Mighty Quinn..Well, a Bob Dylan cover ! Preferred the Manfred Man one
Track Ten: The Constant Springs ...Not exciting !
Track Eleven :Chamchu : Charming enough in its way.
Track Twelve:The Turned On Truth ( The Truth Is Turned On) At 16 mins 14 seconds , this is by far the longest track on the album, and its starts with rehash of the Brimful Of Asha riff......develops into a semi –gospel track but not really a good use of nearly seventeen minutes of digital information in my opinion.

I could not help feeling that I’d gone into the restaurant and ordered a vindaloo and come out with a korma here! Somehow Cornershop have lost their direction..........I think they feel that half day closing on Saturday morning is a good business idea but, the rest of us realise that it`s just bad for trade. Perhaps , its Tjinder who sucks............... ( Lemons ?) Lets hope the next one’s better!!!!!!!!!

1) Who Fingered Rock'n'Roll - 1.5 - yeah yeah yeah is annoying unless it's the Beatles
2) Soul School - 1.5 - "Manchester and Liverpool" is the best part. This sitar is gonna get old.
3) Half Brick - 1.0 - what the heck was the point of that?
4) Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast - 1.0 - and passed it on to this song
5) Shut Southall Down - 1.0 - what the heck was the point of that part 2.
6) Free Love - 1.0 - music wasn't bad but I only speak english, so this sucked a lime
7) The Roll Of Characteristics (Of History In The Making) - 1.5 - I did like the horns and I was actually nodding my head to the beat.
8) Operation Push - 2.0 - actually got into this one
9) The Mighty Quinn - 1.0 - prohibited territory, don't do that again
10) The Constant Springs - 1.0 - was that supposed to be singing. Maybe not. A clarinet? I was waiting for the snake charmer.
11) Chamchu - 1.0 - have no idea what the hell he said. cool bass
12) The Turned On Truth (The Truth Is Turned On) - 1.5 - thank God for gospel singers, but please, 17 minutes?

I own When I Was Born For The 7th Time, and confess I really like Brimful Of Asha, which I probably bought it for. I think I liked Good To Be On The Road Back Home for the female vocal. Proving once again you should never buy an album based on 1 track. This falls into that category. With an overall rating of 1.3, I would not buy this, not even with gryphons money.

Sorry, could only make it through the the first two songs - just so uninteresting. I liked the Norman Cook re-mix of 'Brimful of Asha' and that, apparently, is the extent of my love affair with Cornershop.
