I have just bought a 64 track recording package which I have installed on my brand new laptop . it allowes me to record and playback at the same time and it has up to 64 tracks but also you can bounce down so the possibilities are endless I can now experiment endlessly with new ideas and sounds . also I can record my live stuff with the bands I play in because my laptop has stereo mics , this is just brilliant . no real lateny problems , which I experienced with the old tower , probably because my new machine has a fast Pentium .

Are you going to record many inputs at once? I'm looking into ways to record my band's gigs with separate channels, so I've got my eyes open for ideas.

You can do that with pretty much any new software out there at the moment. All you need is a digital interface with the appropriate amount of inputs. That'll plug into your computer via USB/firewire/thunderbolt/etc. Then you just set up the tracks in your software (aka
DAW).
That's a simplified description. Usually the small details vary depending on the software and computer setup you are using.

I think with the band I would have to record from either the backline or from the stereo output of the mixer
