written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright in 1966 and presented to Percy Sledge just at the time when Sledge had broken up with his girlriend.
Sledge sang his broken heart out on this one as he let his lovelorn grief flow through his vocals.
rumour has it that Sledge changed a line here of there as he made it relevant to his own experience...
ive heard several versions of the song including Joe Cocker and Jimmy Barnes both of whom put their emotions into the song too but this heartbreaker of a song belongs to Mr Percy Sledge IMO
it absolutely conveys the message of heartbreak to a tee IMO

and then there were four....
"SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME"
written by Doc Pumus and Mort Shuman in early 1960 and recorded the same year by U.S r+b vocal group The Drifters...
according to the writers, the underlying story is about a disabled WWII vet who tells his woman that she is free to dance with other men at the saturday dance but must save the last dance of the evening for him...
The original version by Drifters features Ben E King on vocals and was one of the last vocal performances he gave to the group before venturing on a solo career...
its just one of those iconic songs from the early rock and roll days that embelishes everything that was a part of not only rock and roll but also that of 50s and 60s R+B.
the song itself has been recorded by countless artists and all versions i have heard are good but none come close to The drifters and the silky smooth vocals of Ben E King IMO

the eighteenth song on my list...
"AFRICA"
this one may shock some of you, or maybe not???
written by David Paich and Jeff Porcaro and released by american rock band Toto in 1982...
not exactly an anthem with fist pumping chorus lines, no real memorable guitar riffs or pounding drums but this one makes the cut
for the imagery it manages to paint with the lyrics, i mean you can feel the heat from the Serengeti, the wind as it rips down the slopes of Kilimanjaro and the humidity from the rains.
an absolute masterclass of songwriting on a level matched by few IMO

down to the last two songs that make my top 20 list...
"ALWAYS ON MY MIND"
written in 1972 by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher and Mark James...
the perfect song of regret over a relationship that ended due to one's own fault....
originally recorded by Brenda Lee but her version wasnt the first to be released, that statistic goes to Gwen McRae and incidently, the track was the b-side of her "he's not you"....
Lee's version ended up being released shortly after but was only a minor hit, it was Presley's version that became a huge international hit and later Willie Nelson scored a big hit but the biggest hit version of all was a surprise version by UK synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys.
the song just has a beautiful tune and melody which at times hides the sad lyrics to the song, i know a lot of people that that think the song is actually a love song, and yes, it does sound like one (like "every breath you take") but the truth is the complete opposite and that is the reason the song makes the list...
i think Willie Nelson made the best version of the song

Should have anticipated the Bobskidoodle one - two hurricanes in one short list. Who'da thought?? Toto also makes it onto mine which is up to 114 now. LOL! Need to stop and start whittling it down one of these days. Will still never get to 20 though - that's for sure.

no explanations for this one as i think we should all know the the relevance and influence this one had on the history of rock and roll and love or loathe Mr Zimmerman he is the greatest lyricist of all time bar none and arguably the most influential artiste in the music industry.
