Yeah of course it's easy to mis-interpret without 'tone' - but I don't think it's got anything to do with intelligence -I reckon it just depends on whether you and your group use sarcasm regularly and how well you know the person posting. Sarcasm can be tricky even with one of your friends.

The whole discussion made me think of 'Ray' a character from the Mary Whitehouse Experience sketch show in the 90s. He couldn't help but speak in a sarcastic tone of voice even when completely sincere (he was also a Cure fan) - and well hilarity ensued (sometimes)

I like to think that i can spot it, but it is sarcasm is a very english form of humer.

this is not to say that no-one else undestands it, or that no-one outside of england uses it, simply that i think it is used more here

i think that it becomes diffecult to notice it when it is typed because alot of the time it is noticed by tone of vouice or a facial expression.

True, sarcasm is more prevalent in Britiish humor and I admit, that form of humor is lost on some.

For me personally, I enjoy a very dry, sarcastic sense of humor. I like to think I can also detect sarcasm, but agree with you guys, it's difficult to notice when typed. I don't think it's a "stupid people" thing, I think it's just something that you either can appreciate or not. ::

I have a history of being misinterpreted on other fora, so am well aware that this can be a bit of a problem.

Even the use of suitable smilies doesn't guarantee success, besides, telegraphing humour seems so twentieth century...
