David Bowie dead....!
#11
on the UK 'midweek' charts "blackstar" is #1 with the Prelsey/PHO album at #2 (Adele is #3)....
Bowie is 25,000+ sales ahead of Elvis...
he also has fifteen albums on the UK iTunes top40 albums list....

expect Blackstar to topple Adele this week and probably "space oddity" to knock Bieber off the #1 spot on the UK singles chart also.

looking back, seems I soured on Bowie after the Tin Machine stuff
didn't care for either of those albums and I backed off
think I even got Heathen out of the discount bin

I think the Tin Machine stuff came out not long after that "tonight" album from memory???
and again,
Tin Machine was another reinvention of David Bowie,
I had their first album on cassette, I wouldn't know if I still have it after all these years, but its no big loss if I don't have it.

There are very few people in the world whose passing sparks such an outpouring of love, admiration and grief. I got to thinking about why that is; what is it about Bowie that touches us so deeply? What did he embody?

Is it because he was a beautiful human being? Is it in the way he always carried himself? Watch the way he moved – assured grace – there’s an element of bravery in that. Listen to the way he spoke – eloquent and decisive with a rapier sharp wit. Listen to what he wrote – the complexity, the ingenuity. See what he read – his choice of material. He was an artist, both visual and aural and he stood alone.

He also had his vulnerabilities and failings, just as we all do, and it’s clear now that his final work deals with his own mortality. He had to face (and it would appear that he did that with considerable aplomb), head-on, the knowledge that where he was going, we all go on our own. Those squared up shoulders, head held high – all that elegance and all that artistry has gone off on a solo journey and I think we’d like to have gone along with him (in a manner of speaking!) – given him some comfort on the way, in return for everything of himself that he gave to us, because we KNOW him!! Paradoxically, our dollars and pounds - the means by which we could get to know him - that exchange, which is absolutely fair, and his net worth, mean nothing now, and we are unbearably helpless.

Maybe that’s what makes it so hard and so sad – we are forced to deal with the reality of life being terminal - the great equalizer. And none of us wants to leave alone. Well – that’s my feeling about all of this! No stomach for much else at the moment …

After due consideration, and much listening, my alltime fav – no question ….

Very well written piece Ruby,

You mentioned the way he spoke...
My partner Dani asked me today, what do you remember best about Bowie....
My reply:
" the way ge was so articulate in interviews, giving thought to the way he answers questions, his dry humour and his genuine laugh when he found something amusing"

I remember watching an interview with him in Australia around his last tour, 2002ish...

The interviewer asked him about his varying degrees of success or lack thereof and if he regretted some albums or if he wished he could go back and redo anything musically would he...

Bowies answer went something along the lines of....

"I wouldn't change a thing because a particular album lead him to the next one and so on and here I am, I'm happy"

I mean, how positive is that attitude???
I guess he bowed out of this mortal coil the same way...positive and trying to create something new....

10/10 for his outlook on life and mistakes he may or may not have made.

Perhaps we are not from different planets after all!!
