this is a solo effort by Steve Wynn.
leader of The Dream Syndicate,
Track One : Resolution : Pulsing, powering single chords; start this track, giving it a heavy metallic feel. There is melodic variation via a fuzz guitar and the vocal blend to give a very full and loud sound.
Track Two WeDon’t Talk About It: Some how on this track Steve ‘s vocals remind me of a mid seventies Alice Cooper......( The Black Widow ? ) but this is a different story.
Track Three No One Ever Drowns: Bopping track with distinctive keyboards: tight vocals and an interesting lyric make this a track which captures the mind and the feet.
Track Four Consider The Source: Slower and less hurried song, the vocal had something of Bob Dylan about it........There is a wonderful keyboardtrumpetguitar solo in the middle eight. Nice track with a good ,original feel about it.
Track Five Colored Lights: Coming up to Christmas, perhaps colored lights might be a great idea but......... ...clearly that is not on Steve’s mind....There is good guitar work in this one and an intriguing lyric.........................................
Track Six The Death Of Donny B Mournful lament : looking at Donny B , not sure who he is, but seems to have made quite an impression on Steve. This slow and moving ballad gives quite an insight into the dismal life of Donny B. Donny seems to have been a drugs casualty but his identity remains lost in the strains of Steve’s song
Track Seven The Other Side: Much more commercial track ( which might not be a bad choice for a single ), this bounces along and gives one the feel that life is good !
Track Eight Cloud Splitter : Nice jangly guitar track that I enjoyed, a lot !
Track Nine St Millwood: A nice slow track with a real easy feel.Sounds like a song about events where they guy grow up. Love the use of slide guitar in the break !
Track Ten On The Mend : This begins like a lost “Yes” track and then the guitar drags you into an up tempo part which defines the song well. Lyrics come late here, after plenty of instrumental.
Track Eleven Ribbons and Chains: The final track, again good commercial track with nice guitar work a rhythmic tune and strong lyrics......................
An interesting and varied album that shows that Steve is a bit more that just front man!
