The Roots……………..I Got Over

This is an area of music that I do not often go into and so I was quite eager to enter and find out what I was missing:


Track One A Piece Of Light: Interesting start: seemed to owe more to modern jazz than hip hop, light enjoyable and different.


Track Two Walk Alone: Classical piano start with rapping lyrics. Goes alone well and maintains interest. Memorable !!


Track Three Dear God : A hip hop prayer,? Does a street-cred-dude pray ? There are some nice moments in this……………………..


Track Four Radio daze : Again a nice jazzy start, The rap lyrics passed me by ., but there is a good musical feel to the backing.


Track Five Now Or Never: Again it is the backing that has me interested.


Track Six How I Got Over : Talk over vocals over a bopping rhythm start us off here. Street life lyrics about growing up in a street neighborhood. Very listenable !


Track Seven The Flight Of Titus : Smooth start , quite soul like in its approach too shorts though!


Track Eight The day : Sounds like Weather report got involved in this. Nice duet!


Track Nine Right On. Joanna Newsome adds some vocals too thistrack, but nothing really makes it stand out apart from her name !


Track Ten Doin’ It Again They are doin’ it again: good backing to roll behind the rapping lyrics.


Track Eleven The Fire: Only an average track in my opinion.


Track Twelve Tunnel Vision: Nice track with a good feel: too short!


Track Thirteen Web 20-20: Rap vocal to the fore : simplistic in feel!


Track Fourteen Hustla: Streetwalking rhythm eases us to the last bonus track , back to street life and the challenges of in the lyrics ……………..


As I said before, this is not an area I’m strong in, but I enjoyed parts of what I heard. There are jazzy overtones mixed in with soul like backing at times made this an interesting listen.

1) A Peace Of Light - 1.0 - a waste of valuable filler
2) Walk Alone - 1.5 - nice music, but not the rap
3) Dear God - 2.0 - like this laid back jazz feel
4) Radio Daze - 1.5 - the chorus brings it down
5) Now Or Never - 1.5 - same as above
6) How I Got Over - 1.0 - the most upbeat, too much chorus repetition
7) Dilla Tude The Flight Of Titus - 1.0 - more wasted space
8) The Day - 1.5 - nice change with the female
9) Right On - 2.0 - some nice funk, and how can Joanna Newsome hurt
10) Doin It Again - 1.0 - don't do it again
11) The Fire - 1.0 - that chorus is just too white
12) Tunnel Vision - 1.0 - biggest waste yet
13) Web 20/20 - 1.0 - well, maybe not
14) Hustla - 1.0 - what the hell is that background

Really like these guys as the house band on Jimmy Fallons late night, probably because he makes brings them in to be a real part of the show. Had not heard them other than that. So many featured artists here, that it makes them appear just that, a house band. Only those 2 tracks that I liked, so this is not something I would purchase.
