This is my first legitimate post (aside from the introduction one) and I was wondering if you fine people could help me out. I DJ at a college radio station on a classic rock show called Afternoon Archives. I usually try to make a playlist a day before my show, which is on Thursdays, just so I'm ready.
Well when scrolling through 9000 songs (not all classic rock) it gets difficult. Because we are a college station we try to play less heard tracks.
Would anybody like to help me? What are some underrated or not played enough classic rock songs? The official format is 50's through 90's rock.

Let us know what sort of music your listeners would like. A lot of the members on this site like a broad cross section of music. Maybe you should think about (or maybe you are already doing it) doing shows based on eras or genres of music. Should make it easier to select material. I for one would be interested in hearing this radio station - can we hear it online?

You can also try playing the whole of Tubular Bells (the original) by Mike Oldfield. When this was done for the first time back in 73/74 it was the first time a DJ had played a 'concept' album from start to finish without any ad breaks or any other nonsense. It launched the album into the stratosphere. It would also be quite interesting to see how it's perceived these days. People seem to have a very short attention span these days (a result of all the technology available) and few seem to savour something for much longer than a few minutes - reverse psychology might work wonders for you!!!!

Well being a college station, i dont really get too many listeners. But the few call in requests i do get are mainly from people that grew up in the 70's asking for zeppelin or boston. usually a hard rock bands, i tend to play some 90's alternative and that'll occasionally attract some younger listeners. as much as i'm digging "Tubular Bells" which sounds really cool when I'm just chilling. I feel like it wouldn't fit the format of my show. I didn't make the show like this, I signed up for several different shows and this was the one the station managers assigned to me. I dig it because i love rock but theres shows we have where you can play absolutely anything.

I'm on thursdays 12 pm-2 pm. But like i said it is a very eclectic station so if you want to hear other types of music, the kids hear have very broad taste in music. Other shows have plenty to offer.

Good call on The Who, one of my favorite bands. Just put that on the playlist!! Rock n Roll Hoochie Koo is amazing as well. Already got Zeppelin on the playlist but those are two fantastic songs. I've never heard of Focus or Thunderclap Newman so I'll check them out And the rest are songs I love and I definitely don't hear enough
