...a holiday here in Australia to mark "Australia Day"....
today marks the day back in 1788 when Captain Cook landed upon these shores and declared Australia a British Colony and set up our first British settlement in Botany Bay,Sydney.
local Aboriginals refer to today as "invasion day", why i dont know, as they never had a "nation" back then...just numerous tribes of mainly nomadic wanderers!
the English werent the first to arrive here though, here in West Australia about four hundred miles north of Perth a Dutch Explorer named Dirk Hartog landed here some two hundred years prior to Cook, there are also numerous Chinese,Egyption references to Australia that date back several thousand years....
