Hey- I'm aching for the beat of a drum. Could anybody help me establish a starting point for finding some good world music? I know it sounds really far reaching and vague, but anything will do- I need to get my feet wet

Hi Centermez and welcome to MD! A starting point for world music ? A easy place to start would be Gracelands by Paul Simon which has the indigenous rhythms of South Africa at its heart.
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!
It's a mixed up sensation this being alive Oh! it wears a man down into the ground It's the strangest elation I can't describe it Oh it leaves a man weary It makes a man frown..............................Chris Simpson ( "Mixed Up Sensations" 1975 Martin's Cafe )

Lol- I love Abdullah Ibrahim, but I'm not sure he counts as "world music"
And yes... I would have to agree that it's pretty ambiguous xD

One of my all time favorite musicians...Jan Garbarek...Norwegian saxophonist who collaborates with various musicians from different countries...he's been at it for over 40 years !!!!

I know what you mean MH ! The best way to look at it may be the aforementioned(by Gryphon) example...the accessable Paul Simon album Graceland where he collaborates with South African musicians ????...clear as mud ..right...lol..or perhaps a blend or fusion of two or more musics from different countries ????...fictitious example...Ravi Shankar (East Indian sitarist) Meets Chet Atkins (American guitar legend) ???..hope this helps a little ?

I would recommend to listen to Bembeya Jazz's song Temtemba. It is a good song.

Since you're looking for drums I'd recommend Babatunde Olatunji's album Drums of Passion. Huge drumgasm guaranteed.
