I really dislike the new country or pop country as I sometimes call it. I do really enjoy bands like the Avett Brothers, The Civil Wars and Old Crow Medicine Show. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? Even if it's something from the past.

cant go past Loretta Lynn IMO for "real" country told from a womans point of view.
would you call Taylor Swift country?some do, some dont!...if so, her "speak now" album is pretty good

No I don't think of her as country but yes, some people do that's why I used the term 'alternative country' thanks for the recommendations guys
