I really dislike the new country or pop country as I sometimes call it. I do really enjoy bands like the Avett Brothers, The Civil Wars and Old Crow Medicine Show. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? Even if it's something from the past.

cant go past Loretta Lynn IMO for "real" country told from a womans point of view.
would you call Taylor Swift country?some do, some dont!...if so, her "speak now" album is pretty good

Try Okkervil River !!!! a band that doesn't get a lot of mention on MD but one I like very much !
Also Lucinda Williams !!!!...for now.
