Bands you don't understand?!
#1
Ever had someone who has similar taste in music recommend a band/artist to you that you have never heard before and you go to listen to them expecting them to be crash hot (and are let down), and then you are left wondering what so special about them? Here is my top 10 list of such bands/artists.

1.) The Rolling Stones
2.) Bruce Springsteen
3.) Radiohead
4.) The Clash
5.) Foo Fighters
6.) Jimi hendrix
7.) Crowded House
8.) Fall out Boy
9.) Jet
10.) Deep Purple

Disclaimer: These are not my most disliked bands (But I do hate the Stones!), but bands who I do not get and think are somewhat over hyped.

I think that understanding the impact that some of the bands on your list had at the time they broke through helps to appreciate why they are revered.

Many of them are now well past their prime (or in some cases, dead), and may not measure up now. But, in the case of The Stones, The Clash, Springsteen, & Hendrix, at the time they all had a huge impact.

Taste is all very objective, but I find that the more music I listen to, slowly but surely, the more music I tend to embrace. Even stuff that I used to hate. Either that or I'm just getting old !!

I started to try and put a list together of major influential artists that I find over hyped, and my list just consisted of rubbish like Bryan Adams, so I guess I must like most of the revered acts !!

Goos thread though, gets to the heart of why musical taste is such a mysterious subject.

I don't get how you could not understand artists like The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Deep Purple. While it's understandable that you could by underwhelmed by them given all the hype, but as Tiggi said, it's the impact that they had on music.

But then again, I like most of the artists you listed, so I'm probably bias.

I may catch flak for this but as for Fallout Boy I liked their older more underground stuff, the new stuff is OK too. I can relate to the teen angst they have in their songs.

I see these days it's fashionable to make fun of FOB... not sure why. I don't think they are overhyped rather very popular to the really mainstream crowd (listen to a song for 2 weeks on the radion till they move on and forget about it)

I can't understand Dave Mathews and I caught flak for that too the other day. I just don't get why they are so hyped...

I've heard a couple of Dave Matthews Band albums, & I'd agree. Don't quite get what the fuss is about.

Nothing wrong with not liking bands or artists IMO. We can't always like the same stuff. The problems usually start when the expression of views becomes personal.

I think musical taste is too subjective to try and justify. We like what we like and sometimes other people do and sometimes they don't. Just because we don't like something everyone else on the planet seems to doesn't mean we're not getting it, it just means we don't like it because it doesn't touch us in the same way. My list would probably be longer but I can only think of three off the top of my head at the moment:

Prince
The Beach Boys
Tool

I just don't get it and probably never will. I've been trying to like the Beach Boys since I can remember and nothing so I've finally given up. I chalk it up to really hating falsetto voices.

Tool I just can't stand. Never understood the appeal.

Prince I don't dislike but I think he's highly overrated as well.
If you can't be a wonderful example, be a horrifying reminder.

I'm going to approach this a little differently. I will list bands/artists I don't "get" but I think I should. Bands that are very influential and that many people who's music taste I respect like. I don't like them, but I try to.

01. Led Zeppelin. They're up there with the Beatles, Stones, and the Who in terms of popularity and influence/importance etc. But I just can't get into them.

02. Bruce Springsteen. I respect him, and see why others like him so much. But I don't.

03. Frank Zappa. I like him for his political views but I never got into his music.

04. Grateful Dead. Ditto the above. I want to like them, I try, I just can't quite get there.

05. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. I've come close to liking them. I have some Neil Young solo albums. Does that count?

I think regarding CSNY & Neil Young, it depends which NY albums you're talking about Jon. Some of his solo albums are obviously light years away from the group stuff, whilst others are very similar.

Grateful Dead are a tricky one. For years I persevered with them, and couldn't get past a mild liking for them, then about 4 or 5 years ago I had an epiphany whilst listening to one of their live albums, and now adore them. It all just suddenly slotted into place. Can't really think why that might be, unless my musical tastes have slowly shifted in their direction.
