who do you think is the most underated jazz artist. my choice is tenor sax don menza. the hard driving sound this guy gets out of his horn is incredable. i am amazed he is not more famous. take a listen to him. lets have your choices.

Oh ho ho the list goes on. There are plenty of unknown artists who are insane. =) But specifically in what setting and what style is more of the question. =)

"Most"? Can't quantify it like that. Grachan Moncur III is a fave. So was Don Ellis. Sun Ra has more hits than misses for me, but a lot of people don't seem to be able to work out what he was doing.

I appreciate Sun Ra, AEC, Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, John Zorn all the avant garde musicians !!!!... They're not boring and you never know where they'll take you next !!!!

im a trumpet player, so ideally I would have to say Freddie Hubbard. So many people dont know about Arturo Sandoval and his amazing classical play as well as cuban or latin bossa style. He plays the piccolo trumpet like a pro too.

A lot of jazz modal / avant garde and even some fusion is perhaps not so well known to the mainstream but that makes me even more keen to investigate this music ..
