He is well-known is Europe, how about United States?
My fav albums are Tubular Bells, Ommadawn, Incantations, Five Miles Out, Songs of distant Earth.
How many of you know him?

Well known here in the states.
Mainly for Tubular Bells, but all of those albums as well.

Yup,
Tubular Bells is interesting enough for me to have invested in three versions of the album:
- The original
- The orchestral
- Version II
Can't say that I've really liked anything else he's done...
BTW, this belongs in the Rock forum, I'll move it.

Hi Robi83
As you said , mike Oldfield is very well known in Europe.
He is a favorite artist of mine and I have most of his albums and quite a few DVDs.
I have been lucky enough to see him live once at the Empire Pool in Wembley back in the 80s.

For me, Mike Oldfield as been a musical father, a mentor. I can say he changed my life. I possess all of his albums and loved all of them; he's simply my favorite musician/composer/artist.
I live in Canada, in a remote region, so here I don't really hear of Mike Oldfield. I feel kind of alone in my passion for his work, but now with internet I realized I was not alone at all!
I think the best internet site about him is tubular.net; everything is there, including a forum.
As for my favorite albums from him, there are: Hergest Ridge, Incantations, QE2, Islands, Amarok, Tubular Bells 2, Songs of Distant Earth, Guitars and Millennium Bell.
And I would say to any fan to never underestimate the last song from Voyager, Mont St-Michel. One of his greatest masterpiece.

I never had this chance. And now, I really think it will never happen because it have been a very long time he did not do any show and even if he decided to do so, the chances that he comes to Canada, in Quebec are nearly impossible, apart from an ultimate final world tour.

Hi Drealm
I have been a fan of Mike since the very early days.....I remember the release of Tubular Bells in the UK .......I bought most of the vinyl albums and singles as they came out. I have continued the interest right up to the present day. I really feel Mike is one of the icons of the last 40 years and for me he has been the gateway in much new age music ( of which he is the founding father in my eyes)
I love so many pieces of his music but I am especially fond of his cover of The Shadow's wonderful Land
Seeing he was excellent it was around the time of Incantations ......he is such a presence on stage but so shy !!!!

I don't like his latest album 'Music of the spheres'.
It is too classical, I don't like that.
But previously, 'Tres Lunas' and 'Light and Shade' are good albums, though very different to his oldies.
He toured more times in Europe in the 80s, 90s and once in 2000s, including a world tour called 'Five Miles Out world tour'...its a pity he doesn't make concerts these days.
Hopefully sonner or later!

love Tubular Bells and love Songs of Distant Earth. I'm thinking of checking out Ommadawn too.
