this thread is not intended to start 'heated discussion" about the easy access and lax gun laws in the US...
but they do really need to change their gun culture, but unfortunately, it is entrenched so deeply in their society and
so far out of control that I cannot see it even changing,
take a look at this article from Rolling Stone magazine and click on the short video that plots a timeline
from January 1st through to the first week of December with "mass shootings"...
BTW according to the article the FBI define a "mass shooting" as one where three people in a location get shot...

so in over three hundred mass shooting this year in the US the tally stands at:
458....dead
1422..wounded
and that without all the other murders, attempted murders, suicides, attempted suicides, hunting accidents, police shootings, gang/drug related shootings
the body count must be astronomical...
a remember a reading in an article about John Lennon's murder that since his death in December 1980 that there have been one million murders in the US.

Current murder rate in South Africa - 55 people a day! So, the number of people killed in a whole year in the US would only equal 8.3 days in SA. I hate statistics but you can't ignore them either.

you've taken that 8.3 from just the 458 from "mass shootings" Jerome, maybe you just misread what I posted...
if you take the stats from the one million killed by gun related deaths in the US since Lennon's murder the numbers equate to 80+ killed everyday in the US
from gun related incidents.
either way...
death from violent incidents anywhere cannot be condoned...
South Africa's stats are bad...
I know so many people from SA who left because of that reason, not for themselves but for their children's safety and future.
