Deep Soul Singerrs

These folks wrench it up from the guts and put it all out there, sometimes painfully; Wilson Pickett sure qualifies but so does Lee Moses (understand, these were performers who had to get folks who had endured yet another week of grinding misery, to get outside themselves for an hour or so, to maybe share in another's pain and exhilarate on the dancefloor)--I'm not over-thinking this--I've been there.

Wilson Pickett He never smoothed out but if you want raw, consider him with the Falcons:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fkTWZ7jACg << rips the bark off the tree
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FnU46CCpik << no overdubs, no tricks--this is what they played and sang.

post-Falcons but still raw: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y8Q2PATVyI << be sure to read the "About" backstory
A later perf in Italy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qka1ZZPdWyo << Dynamic as ever, with a shout-out to Solomon Burke the original singer
This intro is played so nice and innocuous and sweet then...OMG...that voice cuts in!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhX4liVtuCc

Wilson Pickett....
he is the greatest soul-man IMO,
followed closely by Otis Redding,James Brown and Jackie Wilson

not that i dont like the Motown crew, but i prefer my soul music rough, ragged, edgy and raw

I don't consider Motown as soul music--it's pop music dressed up in soul clothes. The individual artists were soulful enough but Berry Gordy, Jr. ran a smooth, well-oiled machine that had carefully constructed pop. BTW, Michael Jackson--same thing. He wasn't the "King of Soul" but the "King of Pop". A thin line maybe and not a bright line but a line nonetheless. Kinda reminds me of the '50's pop stars doing R&B, all smoothed and blended so as not to give offense to White, Eisenhower-era America. "How Much is That Doggie in the Window?" indeed
