I personally have a hands-down favorite but what's yours? Even symphonic/ork * versions are invited.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwi9Cl-qoAs << through all her painful years, it was the music that sustained her...and she brings it all to us.
# 2 (but vying strongly to be # 1):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DUzT1TD_RM << a gender-flip on a song Shirley "Cha-Cha" Muldowney might have sung to her main squeeze << this obscuro reference cleared up by this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Muldowney << have another listen to that version after this.
* The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra or WDR Big Band would just
kill.

A
kvetch--SteveO's choice is nice, quirky, charming...but not vital. My bad for not laying out any criteria, but a "best" or "essential" cover has to go from the inside out of a piece, exposing it's guts and usually having some deep meaning for the artist. Bro Jerome could explain this much better. Here's another illustration:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmTrNg7Mn1Q << this song of teenage
angst is better done by the sweeter voice of the original BBs but this is damn near righteous.
The best example I know of showing all the above + reimagining the songs is Cassandra Wilson's
Loverly:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSWk7yk_LbA << that, folks, is a consummate guitar intro.

To bring this convo back to BB: here's a chopped up concert by the best BB cover band in the land:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO00LO-it3A << note-for-night perfect, right? One more as a jumping-off point:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFYnsCCWMjA then an artist gets hold of it (it qualifies if the original band backs up a singer?):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFYnsCCWMjA << curious that Bruce Johnston wasn't shown in the studio portion. Did you catch Rick Neilson (of Cheap Trick) as one of the chorus? You wanna cut through the BS and get to the soul of a song? Call in Brother Ray:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dWzSPf0Y30 << any p!ssant challengers you wanna throw up against this? "Throw up" being the operative phrase...

The Beach Boys themselves were a good cover band, mixing them well with originals. Brian Wilson said they did it because the Trio did it--so, partly as homage

Here's 1 song from a Brian Wilson '01 tribute concert: Billy Joel "Don't Worry Baby"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zSbHADm32o << LI, New York resembles Southern California in a lot of ways. Plus Mr. Joel suffered his own set of mental difficulties...so, near-perfect. BONUS from the same concert: Mr. Wilson and Elton John "Wouldn't It Be Nice" b/w "Barbara Ann" and "Fun Fun Fun"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjOYWiN8s..._wZcvXs6oX << look at the backup singers/chorus. Never to be repeated. Watching Elton John and Billy Joel dancing is worth the price of admission. The whole concert
in toto isn't available on YouTube--too chopped up with deletions. Available on DVD though...
