Which decade has better music?

lmao well i can't argue against the music that shaped me, it was from my childhood and still listen to it today, I'm not even sure what direction of music I would have liked if I hadn't heard those bands, my music taste certainly got heavier.

This is something I have thought long about - but more in the context of 'has music peaked? and if so, when did it peak?"

Now, we all know the Beatles wrote 20 classics where other bands could only write 1 but some might say they had a clean slate to work with.

For me the 60's was an emerging decade which changed the face of music but didn't necessarilly contained the best.

The 70's was signifcant in that it brough to the fore legends of music, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Led Zep, Sabbath, Bowie, T-Rex, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Dire Straits, hell even Abba. Then the metal pioneers turned up, Lizzy, Rainbow, Van Halen, Maiden, UFO, Judas Priest.

As good as that was, for me the 80's were the place where music peaked - in terms of sheer great albums, especially mid to late 80's. Appetite for Destruction, Clutching at Straws, Seventh Son Of a Seventh Son, Brothers in Arms, Momentary Lapse of Reason, Whitesnake 1987, Keep The Faith, Tango In The Night, Bad (Michael Jackson), Hounds Of Love, Street Fighting Years, Radio Musicola, Actually (PSB), So - Peter Gabriel, Sowing The Seeds Of Love, Joshua Tree. Quality throughout.

The 90's were a bit more curious manly because music became more fragmented into loads more sub-genres. The only highlights I can remembers include the brilliant Roxette, Savage Garden, Chilli Peppers and Oasis.

For me the new millenium brought back some wonderful new music in the shape of Evanescence, My Chemical Romance, Jimmy Eat World, The Killers, Snow Patrol, 3 Doors Down and Keane to name but a few.

But whichever decade you love there is plenty on offer from all decades to keep us all happilly discovering for many years to come. Peace !

olay guys, the poll simply asked which decade had the best music, therefor i voted present because we have the music of the past plus more. ha, i've beat the system.

i think that i agree with the idea that early rock bands got away with alot of the stuff they did because there wasn't much competition. to day it's much harder. i think our creativity is getting better which means we have more varying music which means we have more options. i like options. back then music was, far from constricting and uncreative, but lacking unconventiality. everybody kinda had to stay in bounds. really the music we had is still in production... it's just being crowded by new music.
society is constantly pushing for the new stuff so you could look at it like this:

say music was a drop of food die placed in water, slowly expanding. if you look clasely the outer expanding edge ( our changing styles of music) is the most dense (it also holds our society, generally, which pushes and forces it outwards to escape from the generation before).... i guess it's a weak metaphkore but it kinda popped into my head.

'90s because i grew up in them, however all my dads '70s-80s punk records are growing on me
and Love Will Tear Us Apart-Joy Division is an absolute classic

I'd vote all if I could. I chose the 60's however since most of the artists and bands I like began then and most of them are still performing! I also like to go back and look at their inspirations. A lot of artists got their inspiration from classical music for example, and I think it's intresting to listen to really old music and move forward in time and hear how the music have changed over the years.

Amen! Up until then, most bands played the same songs as others... That's the reason they started writing their own material, so nobody could play before them and pretty much steal their set list... they kickstarted what became "popular music"... They inspired people and bands to write about peace and love... If not for them, the 60's probably would have been a much darker time... and if not for them, Kurt Cobain probably wouldn't have written the way he did... he was a big fan of the Beatles growing up and it really shows in his music... Nirvana was like the Beatles sound with a distortion pedal...

I think more often than not, your answer to this will depend on the decade you "grew up" in. By that I mean when you matured as a person. Obviously as a rule, kids have little interest in music. Once you reach the age where you actually process music, you develop an interest in what is currently being played in whatever media you are surrounded by. Thus you develop an attachment to that period. In my case that would be the 60's, a decade never to be equaled as far as influence on my musical taste. Those that have a sincere interest will eventually branch out in an effort to discover what they have missed. There is not any genre that doesn't captivate me at this point in my life. But I do reserve the right to qualify that statement with "some stuff just sucks".:wink:

I disagree with what you say. I am 16 and I think the 60's and 70's had the best music.
