Greatest All-Around Musician of All Time
#21
Bellini48 Wrote:Would you all be too offended if I declared J.S. Bach or Franz Liszt as the greatest all-round musician of all time?

Yes. But only because neither is well-known (at least in our time) as excellent musicians. Mr. Bach might be killer running counter-point on the B-3 through a Leslie cabinet but we'll never know.

^ Lol...That reminds me of something I remarked upon to a guitar player pastor friend of mine, while enjoying a nice fall day by the lake, I asked him if a medieval lute player came across the blues scale but didn't know what to do with it? He was baffled and said "maybe" ...lol.

I agree with Paul McCartney and Mike Oldfield and it is difficult to choose between them. The former is a surprisingly good drummer as well as bassist, guitarist and pianist. He plays drums on Band on the Run. McCartney passed his 11 plus exam, a selectional examination on the basis of intelligence, which meant he went to a grammer school at the age of eleven. George Harrison attended the same school and John Lennon went to another grammer. Robert Plant also passed the 11 plus.

Mike Oldfield always thought of himself as a bassist first, but he can play almost anything. I do not know why he does not play drums, although I have read his (extremely interesting) autobiography. John Paul Jones is another bassist who can play anything.

John Miles could switch between piano and guitar on stage and can play both very well. Todd Rundgren is regarded as the multi-instrumentalists' multi-instrumentalist! Although not to my taste, Dave Grohl can play most things.

Y'all can talk all that stuff about this dude or that but remember they all had help from others; this guy does it all: http://www.guitarmachine.com/ A sense of perspective about what music at root is, is always important (he said, in his most hectoring, gasbag tone). Its really hard to choose one musician.. I would say that musicians from the classical era are the most important for me Smile
