Paul McCartney 'tribute album'
#11
Whenever I hear these stories about pretentious ego-driven musicians, I cringe and then I wonder whether they would be the stars that they are had they *not* been pretentious ego-driven individuals. I'm not saying I think it's necessary to be an "asshat" in order to be a success, but when the world is full of down-to-earth genuine musicians with tons of talent who do not make it to the big time, I have to wonder.
Everyone has an Angel: a Guardian who watches over us. We can't know what form they'll take. One day, old man. Next day, little girl. But don't let appearances fool you, they can be as fierce as any dragon. Yet they're not here to fight our battles, but to whisper from our heart. Reminding that it's us: it's everyone of us who holds power over the world we create. -Sweet Pea

I used to think that a bit about Paul Simon 'til that got knocked out of him with a spectacular public failure (that Broadway show). Macca-roon may be pretentious but that vid clip with those bluesey cats didn't look staged and them guys didn't look deferential either. Maybe large parts of him I don't know about. Gene Simmons is a pretentious joke who's parlayed that into great success--gotta appreciate that...if only on its own merits.

here's another piece of trivia from the same mate who got Stings autograph....
this time Gene Simmons at Perth Airport....

"would you mind signing this for me Gene?"

blank stare from Simmons for a few seconds...then grabs the album cover and pen and walks off...
my mate had to literally jog after him to keep up with him....
when he catches up with Simmons all he hears is Gene mockinghim sarcastically and repeating this line over and over again..."please sign this gene, please sign this gene, please sign this gene"

arrogant twat!

other muso's we've had the displeasure of coming in contact with for their total arrogance are:

Paul Weller
GLenn Frey
Don Henley
Roger Waters
Paul Stanley
Cher
Liam and Noel Gallagher

good muso's who actually appear freindly,co-operative and genuine are:

Neil Finn
Tim Finn
Alex Lloyd
Julian Lennon
Joe Cocker
Roger Daltry
Status Quo guys
Mick Jagger

i guess we win some and we lose some,
but meeting the ones who cant be bothered with fans leaves a bitter taste in your mouth especially when youre big fans of that artist...

and IMO, whether they like it or not part of their job is to sign autographs, its not a paid job, but its an unwritten part fo their job description, afterall, its the fans who put them where they are...

like ive always said....

if you dont like wearing suit and tie and standing in front of tv cameras...dont become a politician
if you dont think you can put your life on the line everyday....................dont become a cop, firefighter or any other emergency services worker
if you dont want to be asked by fans to sign and pose for photo's...........dont become a celebrity, remain a recluse

i agree to an extent...
they, like big businessmen/women, have to be ruthless, arrogant and totally self absorbed in that 'dog eat dog' world...
but they also need to remember that without their fans, and in the case of business tycoons their blue collar workers, they would probably not have gotten where they are...

there are of course exceptions to these rules as i am generalizing....

I could readily believe the negatives about Glenn Frey and Don Henley; I'd be sore distressed if that were true of another of the Iggles, Joe Walsh. Shows as a real human in this essay/interview--rock's own Harpo Marx indeed: http://www.answers.com/topic/joe-walsh Not to make anybody wrong but he shows you don't have to be a ruthless jerk to succeed, it just mostly works out that way.

I really enjoyed the blues jam, the Macca Bruce duo was great....Sting shouldn't have been in the mix for Hey Jude!
jazzboCR Wrote:Let me slip in some of Sir Paul's doin's. First up is jamming with some Memphis cats--1/2 hour of sitting in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJWQi-j3-JM#t=98 << he's not "featured", just hanging with the homeys. Yeah, that's Johnny Depp in the fedora and doubtless alcohol and, er, vegetation helped move everybody along. Next is him and Springsteen doing a Beatles classic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDAMRMQr48g << interesting uploader comments and, though not shown, what the promoters did to their encore comes close to a crime... Finally, an all-star "Hey Jude": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgJQ6LQ8x1E << I think Sting is a pretentious a$$hat but WTF
Kinda cheesy to bootleg this in to another topic, but where else would I put it?

From what I have heard...Paul is amiable from what a Hotel clerk told me , Celine Dion is very nice according to a cabbie I know and I think Elvis Costello was pretty cool...eh Crazy? My blood boils when I hear of celebrity snobbery,,,of course regardless the public that haven't encountered the drip still adores the person!

...And is involved in all manner of musical projects that don't have him front and center...And has a very accomplished, very hot jazz singer as his wife...And...And...It's good that the good guys win once in a while. Here's a project from last decade that does have him pushing to the front (sort of) for a very excellent cause: http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-river-...0000395205
