Blue-eyed soul singers
#21
2 unknowns that'll rock your sox
Mia Vermilion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2eaJuqrz...re=related << this and the next with the magnificent lapsteel playing of Orville Johnson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_GFnn0TdDM << soccer mom gets soul deep
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEC0Bttsh6w << ooh that timbre and control, and Orville makes nice with nylon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7e2Mtgf8B1A << sound's merely OK--included as an archival item
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a86hfcJbyRc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT_Ml0vo4dY

I don't do this often but here's her site. She's a working blueswoman and IS FOR HIRE. http://www.miavermillion.com/

Robin Rogers She was taken from us at 55 in a particularly painful way--much too early. In lieu of a wiki, there's this: http://www.npr.org/2010/12/18/132162131/...lt-Blessed That's the downer; here's the upper:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyyqq8oHW3w << hell of an arrangement and playing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1f9H6C4cFU << sittin' in with the low-down best Ms. Rogers wrote it...nice backfill harp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z78D1Uk5qJo << talk to me, woman...I'm sure ready to listen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHt5AbN5FEE << a good buck was spent on this and it's all there for us to enjoy/revel in.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsnUzFt73TA << wrote this one too--multi-talented was she. RIP Robin Rogers.

Blue-eyed soul is in good hands with this guy --Roseanne Cash is much enamored:

a Romanian and the daughter of an industry legend: Daniel Lazar and Nikka Costa.
Daniel Lazar He's not just soul but that's my focus here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKwgPVBsSes Romania and its people have been subjugated enough through the centuries to have genuine soul
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Xq1dwTpH-c
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMc9xK9uqHM << serious players backing him...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlXUIgplvBY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgCyFIfiF5o << my idea of a wedding band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WouWMTlSLcM

Nikki Costa Daughter of Don Costa--when you think "later period Frank Sinatra", you think "Don Costa"; heckuva a guitarist too. She has been recording since age 5, and is married to and works with an Australian and lives there with their daughter. All that doesn't even slow up my lust for her one whit...hearing her breathy singing, I mean.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJk7s5RJFRo 240p club date vid but the sound's right there. Coming home in triumph
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVESHBfuXrU << Lets an expletive or so go undeleted BUT brings out the best fun she stimulates in the band (authentic) and the audience (close to ecstasy w/o the drug)--how often is that the case?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-psXOUkQ1qA << the discs are "perfect" and a bit over-produced. The proof's above about her loosening up in concert...but still maintaining that edge.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYA5i4XhFJA << where she came from...big switch, yes?
Another and w/21st century take: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hu8hqWpuzNU << her father Don Costa on guitar and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeARjMR6dyM << interview/rehash--the modern version starts at 4:50
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_ZkJH41z...40&index=3 << deliberately primitive vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjWAE1zEgYw << yes, that's himself on guitar. When you hear someone say "They played the dogsh!t outta that song!", think of this. Supremely powerful and within-loose-limits-controlled but no (I mean zero) false histrionics or hysteria. The measure of a stage version. Boom!

2 British women from back in the day: Cilla Black and Lisa Stansfield. If you want to consider them only marginally soulful, I won't fuss...but it damn sure won't keep me from enjoying them.

Cilla Black Dame Black has been a singer, actress, comedienne and show presenter--50 years in show biz. Sang the #1-in-sales single by a British woman in the '60's, presented here:

Lisa Stansfield Been killin' since the '80's. She's sold 20+ million discs.

Blue-eyed Soul is in terrific hands (and voice) with these 2 women: Adele and Joss Stone. Amy Winehouse will not be mentioned.
Adele One of the commenters said,"...like whiskey poured over ice cream..." or whisky, depending on which flavor you choose

2 more UKsters, one of whom I had to be convinced about (your guess which): Paul Carrack and Bryan Ferry.
Paul Carrack He's been called "rock's ultimate journeyman", never staying in one place too long but contributing mightily in his time spent. Here as a singer but he's a fearsome good piano/organ player too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee6F9tik6Ew << If they are worthy of praise in your funeral oration, they are worthy of praise now face-to-face...Let it go and make the effort.

Bryan Ferry Annoying or thrilling--6/5 pick'm.

2 outliers: John Miles and Charlie Rich
John Miles Not officially reviewed on AMG but his fans sure approve--a Rock singer with a soulful touch: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/john-mile...iscography
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqK7Sy79-eQ << not conventional soul but a killer cover
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCbLdWYGYxk << his voice cuts in at about 2:00

Charlie Rich You might think of him as Country; I think of him as the soul of Country. This bio makes my case: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/charlie-r.../biography << he died about 20 years ago. RIP, Charlie Rich.

Don't know as I'd consider Sam Brown a soulster but she sure does well with a crack R&B ork behind her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYn6RPftoFc More convincing? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRdQ9r5OqrU << this is more like it. If this isn't soul, than neither is Roberta Flack's--both women fetch it up in their different ways, from a woman's soul. Case closed. This on the other hand is nothing like soul (closer to what Renee Fleming or Dame Kiri Te Kanawa might do on a light-hearted day)--included because she is the lyricist, Jon Lord writing the music). Then there's this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRrXXXd2DSU

David Gray On the surface, not a soul singer but as a friend says, he has the controlled emotion [but that emotion is expressed] of the some of the best in the soul traditiion. Many would say this Alt Folk- I'm OK with that...if you can imagine these songs in the hands of the right Soul producer and right progressive players. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRY9N3Vzkrg&list=PL4A14BB1E7F6FACD0 << Can't get this to post righteously but plug his name into YouTube and look for Zermatt Unplugged--be amazed.

Kenny Vance As varied a music career as you'll find--singer/songwriter/producer fro the '50's to date. Founding member of Jay and the Americans (opening act for both the Beatles and the Stones 1st US tours) and hired Becker & Fagen (Steely Dan) to be in his band --they also did horn and string arrangements. Music supervisor for the movies Animal House, Eddie and the Cruisers and American Hot Wax. Music director for SNL for 2 years. Started and led Kenny Vance and the Planotones (continues to this day). Has produced or performed with artists as varied as Don McLean, Yusef Lateef and Tracy Ullman. Helluva guy.

Eli "Paperboy" Reed Newer on the scene. Plays keys as well. Spent a year in Clarksdale, Mississippi, immersing himself in the Deep South juke joint culture. Looks to have a solid future.
