Blue-eyed soul singers
#1
I see a lot of newer MOBO here; this Thread is about full-throated pioneers.
Delbert McClinton Pride of West Texas and a soul man if there ever was one. Grown himself into a hellified songwriter too

Special treat--DM singing with Bonnie Bramlett--weak audio so turn it up and GIT DANCIN': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48KfsOen_...re=related

How about that James Hunter? A gritty Brit from the Industrial North. The classic pre-Soul era personified...with his own spin on it.:

MOBO is music of Black origin--huge festival celebrating it in the UK. The term includes ALL Black music, even non-Western.
So, now, Mick Hucknall. Late of Simply Red, he's just been terrific with American Soul/R&B (that Celtic soul, dontcha know?)--an album of his last year was American Soul with an accompanying sold-out tour. But some earlier stuff:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yG07WSu7Q9w
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eeH8lZrUyg << a later perf but he's done this song forever

Michael Grimm Name new to you? Just came up through a TV talent show--knocked'm dead, yes he did
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvRDdNbq25g << weak sound

BTW, Beth Hart and any strong guitarist is a marriage made in heaven. Thanks for sharing, cuz Jeff Beck doesn't share a stage with mutts or wanna-be's

Enjoyed R_Burke's choices--what I was looking to provoke. Old-school feelings and musical expressions by young-un's not just riding a fad. Mayer Hawthorne has been featured on Darryl Hall's excellent Internet TV show--worth seeking out. But that video...totally disparate from the song's intent. Most of the YouTube commenters said the same.

Let's give the women some props, so here's Lydia Pense and Tracey Nelson.
Lydia Pense If there were any justice in the world, everybody would forget that Texas thief/poseur (the initials are JJ) and remember her. Bad management, bad publicity, not enough "push" by the band--who knows? But what they left us with * is this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nit9gSsLHg << Go ahead and talk all that stuff about East Bay Grease...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLb6rUZlJ7A << ...West Bay (SF and Marin County) folks got serious chops and serious feeling. Some wig-spinning stuff for sure.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZQYV9njOu4 << They build this song so well...

* They haven't left us--a California tour in '14 + and East Coast excursion--see this for details: http://www.lydiapense.com/TourSchedule.html

Tracy Nelson The original Earth Mother; the pride of MadTown Wisconsin (aka Madison, the state capitol):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThhOewiZWu8 << Gospel, of a kind.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0LuJa3adRw << Another'n from back in the day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo8u6t--n8Q << trading choruses with Irma Thomas
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eyuh4wksuCg << Ms. Bramlett will appear in another post

A group and a singer. You've heard of the singer; the group is less well-remembered. Group first:
Redbone Took a racist word and spat it back, much as NWA did with the first word in their name. Well-seasoned in Las Vegas casino house bands, these guys bring a non-melismatic, almost monotonic approach to the music (think: the trance blues of RL Burnside, Junior Kimbrough and others in the Delta). Shows you how wide-ranging Soul/R&B can be.:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHEuSGGmX-c
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VB2LdOU6vo << a bit political but so was Curtis Mayfield
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj8ScYGokec
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAxaTMVW1f0 << Powerful. Hypnotic. Some disturbing images displayed.

Michael McDonald Needs no introduction. From singing on Steely Dan records to this very minute, he brings class, style, and an understated personage to the proceedings. He's also generous in lending his time, talent, and reputational muscle to make special occasions happen (like Springsteen and Keith Richards have):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCf_j0rHfr0 << an hour+ of his later solo stuff--a bit slick for some who prefer a grittier approach...but that voice...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4eew6iqa90 << here's a duet for you...KL to be covered later
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPEvB_NEvSs << been there oh yes. From '92.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G54lfxiid_w << '96 Reunion Concert
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_GmuIHL_EM << another from the same concert. Were his former bandmates ever happy he shined around? Oh yes!

Ms. Stone has made that Curtis Mayfield classic her own. Here's another take (with Jeff Beck): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4N5o3GIGsY << As another commenter said, I could listen to Joss Stone all day, especially when she tones down the melisma *. More powerful when done with a measure of restraint--much overdone in modern Black music.

* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melisma << definition included as we have such a wide audience
