Aha, now I know who the Alabama Shakes girl sounds like. Etta James covers all styles on this compilation. I was thinking her heyday was the
50's, but nothing on here earlier than 1960, with her best song for me, At Last. And the label wouldn't lie, telling me this was her best when
it wasn't. In fact, most of these are from 60-63. Later tracks Etta takes on more of an Aretha sound. Five love tracks, with four I don't care
for. Shows this album charting in 2012 at #59, which must have been a surge from her death that year at the age of 73, after being diagnosed
with leukemia the previous year. She survived her rounds with heroin addiction, being admitted for treatment 3 times.

Briana Brandy is one of the freshest hip-hop artists in Phoenix. Her edgy music is driven by her love for songwriting. She is also inspired by the many different places she has lived such as The Dominican Republic. She has been doing this since she was sixteen and she is going to be the next big thing.

R&B music is my favourite one ! I love so many singers......

But most of all I'm fond of R.Kelly! He is awesome fantastic! His voice is flattering and very sexy, let alone his appearance! I don't use a music-player, couse I can find his all songs in http://music.naij.com/artist-1055-rkelly and dance all day long! But no matter how much I appreciate his work, I must admit, that now he isn't what he used to be! Don't you agree with me????????

back to Etta James...
i noticed you love "i'd rather go blind", me too, thats my favourite of hers!
Paul Weller does a good version of that song also...
he recorded it in one take one night whilst drunk after his girlfriend left him,its really mournful and emotive cool stuff IMO!
original take featured Weller on piano/vocals and his roadie on guitar...drums,bass,keyboards etc were added the next day when he sobered up.

this is Mick Hucknall and Co.'s second album...
i own their first five(well, between four and six anyway so i'll call it five for this post!)
i love/like a lot their white-boy blue eyed soul, it doesnt sound forced nor does it sound fake/artificial like a lot of the other guys from the 1980s...and the majority of Style Council's soul fits into the latter catagory also!...
these guys have the right balance of instruments, fantastic soul vocals from Hucknall and real soul melodies that the legends of that genre would approve of.
look, you either like these guys or you dont, theres no middleground with them, they have a sound and they stick to it.
not their best album but the score here probably reflects what an average Simply Red album should score..
again, why werent these guys as popular in the US as they were in europe and australia????

OTIS REDDING "dictionary of soul:complete and unbelievable" cd, 1966

career stats:
studio albums: 10
singles: 48

this album: #73 US, #5 US/R+B, #23 UK

singles:
"my lovers prayer"..........#61 US, #10 US R+B, #37 UK
"fa fa fa fa(sad song)".....#29 US, #12 US R+B, #23 UK, #70 AU
"try a little tenderness"....#25 US, #4 US R+B, #46 UK
"daytripper"...................#42 UK

NOTE:
to any youngsters on this site who may read this,"r+b" stands for "rhythm and blues" and means exactly that, not the skanky, trashy psuedo-soul your generation calls "r+b"!
now we've got that out of the way, time for the album...
you regulars on this forum know im a huge fan of Otis Redding and fellow R+B giant Wilson Pickett, especially the material each released prior to 1970
this was Otis' fifth studio album and the last one that was released prior to his untimely death.
this is typical "rough around the edges" soul that Otis is best known for, it has feeling, and more importantly it has 'soul' down to the bottom of its soul!
a couple of interesting covers on here...
"tennessee waltz",an interesting r+b take on the country classic.
"daytripper", a solid interpretation of the Beatles song
"she put the hurt on me",the original version of the song that Spencer Davis Group recorded later in that year.
this album is rated at #251 on the Rolling Stone "top500 albums of all time" list.
