old bands new music?

hey guys just wondering how do you feel about classic bands coming out with new music? i feel like it a great thing to show us they can still rock but sometimes i think it could be a problem. If a band i love puts out a bad album then this could harm their legacy. one example is van halens last album still certified gold but gary cherone is no david lee rot. With new albums from aerosmith kiss van halen ratt and anthrax how do you feel these bands will fare onb the new music scene?

I know what you mean. I was listening to one of The Stones more recent live albums today, and it made me think that whilst the band seem largely irrelevant today, they are still a good band.

Won't be everyone's favourites, but I think they can still hold their heads up high...

Generally speaking, I think the creative output of the average band has its limits.

From what little I understand about artists, they have to create, even if what they create may start to sound redundant, out-of-touch, etc. as they get older. If they want to keep producing, that's their business, so long as we're not expected to buy it.

The problem over the past @20 years seems to be the fixation on old bands. The industry and the fans seem to be constantly on the edge of their seats waiting to see if Sir Paul or the Stones can still pull it off, rather than looking for new talent and new music of the same caliber as those bands in their heyday.

Old bands writing music in the present is just the same as said bands writing new material when they were more popular. A hiatus/breakup etc. doesn't usually mean that the band will be terrible in the present. For example, I had never listened to Metallica before until I got Death Magnetic, and i loved that :biggrin:

van halken was never any good? buddy idc if i wasnt one of the biggest van halen fans in the world eddie is the best living guitarist and people like to say hes second best ever only to hendrix. i say that people only say that cuz hes dead. eddie has more talent than any other gutarist ever. jimmy page invented tapping? yeah well eddie was the one who took it to new extremes and showed up anyone who was on stage after or before them. they opened for sabbath in early days and sabbath got boo'd off stage IN ENGLAND MIND YOU to this brand new american band cuz eddie was so unreal. not to mention how amazing alex is on drums michaela anthony was with meolidc backing vocals and bass lines and how great of a front man is roth? probably the most charasmatic to ever live. thank you goodbye.

Jimmy Page didn't invent tapping. Jimmy Webster in the 50s already used tapping and it originated from violin techniques and folklore stuff.
There are much better guitarists, such as Trey Azagthot or Muhammed Suicmez. Just listen to some tech death or grind and you'll see real skill.
Alex isn't very special on drums. Dave Lombardo or Zach Hill outplay him pretty easily.
Same with Anthony. Ever listened to Cliff Burton?
Roth isn't much of a great singer and his hair and his multicolored costumes seem pretty ridiculous.

It's disappointing to get let down by a bands new album after you've supported them and promoted them to your friends but unfortunately it seems to happen to most bands in the end (maybe U2 / Madonna buck this trend though?)

After the greatness of Sams Town I was totally let down by The Killer's latest effort.

However there have been some 'newer' albums by 'older' bands that I have absolutely loved such as:

Walk On Water by UFO in 1995
C'mon C'mon by Sheryl Crow in 2001
Slang by Def Leppard in 1997
Just Push Play by Aerosmith in 2001
Dragontown by Alice Cooper in 2001
