The interweb is a wonderful thing...

trbc08 Wrote:I think I could understand being more of an Anglophile if I lived in Europe. There have been some great English writers (two of my favorites being Irish, Wilde and Yeats). I suppose I'm speaking from the perspective of a culturally stunted American, which many of us (Americans) are.

It'd be nice to read philosophical texts in their original language... Some of them are difficult enough to read in your native language, though, at times. Nietzsche is a notable exception.

America's got that multi-cultural thing going on that broadens the cultural horizon. I think less diverse countries are more culturally sterile, a longer history doesn't always cut it. If you mean that some Americans are culturally stunted - that happens everywhere (even in the land of saints and scholars).

I'm not so bothered about philosophy but if I could read something in the native language, I love to be able to read Irish poetry properly, my Irish isn't good enough to do that as well as I'd like.

Schopenhauer seems really interesting to me. I was reading about how his view on aesthetics was largely influential to a lot of great European writers. I'd like to read that book as well... I actually saw a fairly cheap copy of it on Amazon, translated, that I was thinking about buying a couple of weeks ago. I also want to get Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, and Philosophical Investigations. I watched a biopic about him a while back and he and his thinking seems really fascinating to me... It all coincides with modern philosophy's seeming focus on language, which I think is really interesting.

I have a young mind, at the very least, Tiggi. I wouldn't say great, or even remotely close to that.

I suppose it's moreso in the part of America that I live in, but it's largely xenophobic and jingoist in a scary sort of way. I live in the deep south, though. From what I've heard, it's different in other places, especially out west.

Philosophy isn't as bad as poetry is in translation, considering that it's generally very technical, with the exception of a few philosophers. Poetry is much harder though, it seems. As bad as my French is, I can tell at times when translations are very, very off in the interest of using contrived rhymes.

I am heavily into sports, mainly football, which i play when i can. I am currently undertaking a new fitness regime as i want more muscles than i can handle and to protect myself. I also enjoy reading novels of many kinds, go to the cinema when i can and like to watch as many films as possible. Then there is cooking, blah blah blah, i could go on forever. To put it short, i am interested in many things and participate in many things when i have the money to do so.

ahh, i have observed that there are many great minds that are not only into music but also into great things like phillosophy to sports to even video games and cooking on this site.

myself, am into all of the above. i'm a senior in high school and am probably going into a human resource/social service carrier such as being a councilor or psychologist. spychology is by far my favorite subject. phillosophy is probably my second right up there with music theory. as far as school goes that's what i like.
outside of school i'd probably say that my favorite things to do are camp, jog, play the occasional video game, hang out with my amazing girlfriend, listen to music, wander at night, sandboard, surf, and just plain old think. i think alot of people think that thinking is overrated (that's alot of thinks) which is fooey.
living in eugene Oregon i also don't mind the occasional hippy kinda experience. iykwim.

Spychology is interesting, isn't it...

...and thinking is grossly under-rated.
