What Are You Listening To?

SIMPLY RED "stars" cd, 1991

album chart placings: UK #1, AU #7, US #76

singles:

"something got me started".#11 UK, #29 AU, #23 US
"stars"..............................#8 UK, #29 AU, #44 US
"your mirror".....................#17 UK
"for your babies"................#9 UK, #55 AU
"freedom"..........................no chart enties anywhere

Mick Hucknall and co's fourth studio set, i have four or five of their albums(early ones), and their biggest seller, making 12x platinum in their homeland, platinum most other places, but barely reached gold status in the US...WTF!
i always thought these guys were a good band, very consistant in the quality of their output, but they always seemed to lack something that would put them into what i would call 'superstar' status to me...
this album is as usual, very good, with three great tracks IMO,
album is full of their standard soul, jazzy, bluesy, funk tinged sounds...
as a footnote old 1970s band The Faces reformed a couple of years ago in the Uk for a short tour, Rod Stewart's vocals during rehearals failed to hit the mark, The Faces then offered the role of vocalist to Paul Weller, who politely turned it down...next on the list was Mick Hucknall, he was free and took up the offer to rave reviews in the UK music press for his efforts, so, obviously the guy still has it!

Not much here quantity wise, with 9 tracks in under 30 minutes. Hard to knock the traditional christian
songs given the soul treatment by Mr. Green. Had to have picked it up in a discount bin somewhere.
Raised in a religiously devout family, Al was kicked out of the family home in his teens after his
father caught him listening to Jackie Wilson. That's pretty funny. Wonder how dad responded after Al's
success. Jackie is lited as one of Al's idols along with James Brown, Sam Cooke and Wilson Picket. Nice
list. His biggest success came in the early to late 70's as he consistently hit the top of the r&b
charts and crossed over with several huge hits. When his fame started to fade, Al made the move to
Myrrh Records and recorded only traditional gospel music for the next 15 years. This is the third of
his gospel albums and not surprisingly it failed to chart. He became an ordained minister in Memphis in
1976 but returned to secular music in 1988. Never reached his peak again but he did have a top 10 album
in 2008. Inducted into the R&R Hall Of Fame in 1995.

WILSON PICKETT "the sound of...." cd, 1967

career stats:
studio albums.....20
compilations.......24
singles...............61

this album: #54 US

singles:
"soul dance #3"...............#55 US
"i found a love pt's 1+2"...#32 US
"you cant stand alone".....# 70 US
"im sorry about that".......# 8 US

its not very often that i get two tracks on a Wilson album that i dont like, but this one opens up with two such songs!
luckily, the album picks up from there and has all the usual hallmarks of a Pickett album...
i love this guy immensely, as i do any artist from the 1960s who came from the Atlantic/Stax record labels, they all seem to have a raw, ragged, live feel to their music, unlike the suoer smooth polished Motown sounds(nothing wrong with that of course) i guess the smooth sophisticated guys and gals naturally went to Motown.
all up not a bad album, was expecting a lot worse for an album when it started off with the two bad ones, wasnt long after this album that he went into a steep decline on the charts, and the chart placings for the singles off this one show he was pretty much yesterdays hit maker by 1967.
