Funny how they come up with these labels for artists, media driven no doubt. Queen Of Soul stuck for
Aretha. Many artists could wear that title proudly. Title for this includes the 60's, but the last
track says 1970, so they lied. Probably not a very complete compilations, since she has 38 albums,
and I don't think I even have any studio ones, but it covers her biggest years. Material pulled from
her first 5 albums with Atlantic, from 67-70, and 1 track not on an album. Although she did not hit
it big until '67, she started recording back in '58, mostly gospel material. Sam Cooke is the man who
convinced her to make the cross over. Her daddy Rev. Franklin dissaproved, but probably changed his
mind after the success that followed. The hits speak for themselves, all of them hitting both the r&b
and pop charts.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

O C SMITH "the very best of..." cd,2003.

although O C's songs are classed as soul/r+b they do have a distinct country sound also....and it proves that when he covers "help me make it through the night".
O C had a long road prior to his first hit in 1968...he released his first single in 1955, a cover of Little Richard's "tutti fruiti"..
his breakthrough hit was the sublime "son of hickory holler's tramp", well, only a minor hit in the US barely making the top40, but got to #2 here and in the UK.
his second hit "little green apples",was, a minor hit here and in the UK, yet managed to sell a million copies in the Us reaching #1 over there...
most of the material here is pretty good to great IMO...tough call between that 'hickory holler' track and "daddy's little man" for best track, but i gotta go for the former on this occasion...
all up, a very good artist who is generally forgotten or overlooked in the annuls of popular music!

why is this in this genre?

I like a few of David's songs
but I haven't liked him as a person
since I heard some of his racist recordings
always wondered if he regrets those

Reply

I put it here because of Johnny Ace (Soul RB) not DAC and I like the song. I know DAC and his band. He is not what he seems. Johnny Ace was black and DAC liked him. DAC has had a black drummer in the past also. There are things DAC does and says I don't approve however.
OTIS REDDING "otis blue:otis redding sings soul" 1965.

album chart placings:
UK #6, US #75
singles:
"respect" #35 US
"ive been loving you too long" #21 US
"shake" #47 US
"satisfaction" #31 US

Otis' third studio set...
contains, the original version of "respect"...i like it, but Aretha's cover is better!
also contains a cover of the Stones classic "satisfaction"...i dont like this one.
album also contains his greatest ballad in "ive been loving you too long"...
i wasnt aware until i looked up Otis on wikkipedia that he was a multi-talented guy, he plays guitar, drums, keys, was a songwriter, producer and arranger in his short but influential career...
i would have loved this album had it not been for that stupid cover of "satisfaction", all up though, a very good album of pure r+b.
