THE SPECIAL A.K.A "nelson mandela" b/w "break down the door" 1984

The Specials under the name AKA after three of them left to form Fun Boy 3, a year or so earlier...
loved this one then, and love it still...i have this one on 7" and 12", the 12" is superb with the full 6+ minute version of this song inciting the release of South African political prisoner Nelson Mandela several years before they actually let him go...
single only reached #66 here, quite dismall effort really, but then again it didnt get much airplay because it was politicised!, single was produced by Elvis Costello..
a great piece of work IMO and my favourite of theirs, "b" side, well, its ok,nothing special(pardon the pun..LOL)

RICHARD HARRIS "mac arthur park" b/w "didnt we" 1969

FFS...the ultimate piece of crap, and whats worse it lasts over six minutes, who the hell wants to know about an idiot who left his cake out in the rain when it took him so long to bake it!?, i never liked this song at all, think i only bought it at a flea market because it was a #1 hit almost everywhere...
yeh, like i said, i hate this one with a passion, but his singing is better than his acting IMO, didnt like him doing that neither...
best thing about this song is that UK 'spoof' group Barron Knights actually did a parody of this around 1979ish, their song was about Aurther Clarke who was a gardener in the park...very funny stuff indeed, if a link to their version is available i will post it also...

WHAM! "last christmas" b/w "everything she wants" 1984

it was a fight for the number#1 spot here in australia to be #1 at Christmas...we had this one, the superb "power of love" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood and the equally brilliant "do they know its christmas?" by Band Aid...which won the race!
this one though, did make it to #3, one of the best festive sounding songs by a pop band ever IMO, not so keen on the "b" side, i mean its okay but not bad

ANITA WARD "ring my bell" b/w "if i could feel that old feling again" 1979

only real hit anywhere for this gal from Memphis,Tn...
sort of cross between r+b/disco but not really either, very blurred lines in music sometimes...
single reached #1 most places but only managed #3 here..
the "b" side...a piano based r+b soul thing, probably could have been an "a" side or at least made this a double"a" sided hit, but it didnt, either way, i love both tracks on offer here!

UB40 "i would do for you" b/w "hit it" 1989

i used to love these guys back in the day, not too keen on them now though for some reason?
this one wasnt a big hit in the Uk for them, and didnt even make the charts here, guess i bought it because it was UB40...
yeh,ya know, this one still sounds okay to me, the "b" side, "hit it"...leaves a lot to be desired though!

HUMAN LEAGUE "mirror man" b/w "you remind me of gold" 1982

when this one got pulled out of the box i wasnt sure how it would fare after all this time even though i love their debut album "dare"...i neednt have worried though, it still stands up okay for the early 1980s synth pop that it is...the single reached #4 on our charts which is higher than i thought it did...

HUMAN LEAGUE "love action" b/w "hard times" 1981

amazing that with all the singles i have, two HL singles come out one after the other??!!
this one was off their brilliant "dare" album...
this one only reached #12 out here on our charts...
the "b" side is a piece of crap, only lyrics sung/spoken over four minutes are 'hard times'...real intelligent stuff eh?!

KIM WILDE "(you keep me) hanging on" b/w "loving you" 1986

daughter of 1960s pop singer Marty Wilde...
this is a cover of the old Supremes hit full of horrible 1980s synth beats and sounds...abysmal stuff IMO,
i obviously liked it back then so did many others as this one reached #1 here..., and the "b" side is even worse!
