Cool bands
#1
Metal heads

if a band gets a certain number of fans, does it become a bad band to enjoy? i read the threads and see a fair few threads where people have said that they dont like a band because they are too popular/mainstream, whatever you want to call it.

is a good metal band's credibity damaged by the amount of success they achive? or do we all want to just feel that we are a "individual" and that the music we like, only we like?

very confused

Syn

PS. sorry for tarnashing the forum with the word "cool", i know but my breain has died and it cant be arsed to think

It's a good point.

There will always be a degree of cultural elitism I think. It can even occur where you'll hear someone say they used to like a band until they sold out (became popular). So a band is only good when it's part of an exclusive, elitist club, and popularity is enough to send the cultural elitists running for the hills.

On the other hand, some bands just get lazy and crap as they get older.

My fave band is Pink Floyd, so I'd have to say success is no barrier to me in whether I like a band or not.

As long as they aren't selling out too much (e.g. Metallica lulz) it doesn't matter. Unless you're a hardcore black metal fan.

It doesn't matter to me how popular a band gets. What matters is if they compromise their sound to get that success.

yeah ok, but what im trying to open up is weather or not a bands music is damaged my a mass of fans?

if everyone likes song "a" does it make song a crap? if only 1 person likes song "b" does it make it better then song "a"?

could success in music rely on the careful management of fans? assumeing that the music sounds the same and is still good

If a song is very popular I probably won't like it. I don't not like it because its popular, but because songs that appeal to the masses are usually not appealing to me. What I'm saying is I don't have the same taste in music that millions of people do. Generally. I do like some pop(ular) music.

Personally I find it strange that someone won't listen to a band or song just because it's very popular. Quite frankly music and one's tastes and preferences depend on personal choice. If something sounds good and you love listening to it, why would you stop just because it's very popular?!? Don't force yourself to not listen to someone just because they're popular.

I would agree with you in principle, but JonG's comments are valid.

Most mainstream artists are hyped ad nauseum, and I think it's fairly healthy to avoid the hyped stuff until the dust settles and we all have the opportunity to assess whether or not there is any real talent at play...

It is true that I get turned off when my favorite band goes mainstream or have become very popular. I think it's psychological.

Maybe it has something to do with a sense of "ownership". That may sound very pompous, but I do not mean it that way.

Here's what I mean.
think how it makes you feel when you discover some little known artist who just blows you away! As you tell all your friends about this artist, it sort of gives you a feeling of ownership of this artist. He is your little secret, in a way, a secret to share to whomever of your choosing. Then all of the sudden he hits it big, and he is on everyone's lips, CD players and MP3 players. All the sudden now they are no longer "yours", playing these nice little intimate gigs, seemingly down to earth, but instead a BIG STAR with a staff of "people" and in a sense, to us looks like they sold out their music, for that all mighty dollar.

That's just my theroy anyway. :coffee:
