How does the perception of popular music vary from land to land?

SteveO Wrote:We have very little exposure to European artists here. Canada and I think Eastern Canada in particular are influenced by what Americans are predominantly into. Rap, hip hop, electro dance to name a few. Country music is very huge over here in the Maritmes as well as Celtic music because of our Irish/Scottish ancestory.

I read an article stating that per capita North Americans in general rated very low percentage wise as far as heavy metal goes. Just look at the various festivals Wacken, etc. that go on in Europe ! I know people here in Nova Scotia that attend the European festivals every year.

I'm probably way off base regarding your question, Gryph. But I think this is one example - Paul Weller -very big in the UK but unheard of over here. I learned about him because Crazy -Horse mentioned him. MD is a great music information centre.

What I'm trying to get across is that the general public music audience is into Lady GaGa, ACDC, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Stones,Metallica, etc. but the lesser known bands are ignored because unless you're really into music and devote the time to research and investigate new music you only listen to what's popular for the moment and what's on MTV and the radio.I like Opeth and when I mention them to my co workers, acquaitances or friends they don't have a clue.

In closing I think in general that most of us have a grasp on who the music legends are.

going back to your Paul Weller comment SteveO, check out the "beginners guide to Paul Weller" i did six months ago, theres links to just about every album track from 1977 to his latest album released last year, read my thoughts on each album, try the links and find the albums you like and take it from there,i have tried to detail the style of music on each album to lead members in the direction that suits their musical taste...what i perceive as being good or bad is purely my opinion but it does come from 31 years of following his career quite closely. if you do and youre not sure of confused about what to purchase, drop me a PM and we can discuss it, i even own all dvds so i can advise on which ones give best value for money also.

Jerome Wrote:By the way SteveO, found one of the Ryuichi Sakomoto CD's - 'moto.tronic' - quite a diverse selection on it.

And the the other guy he collaborated with was David Sylvian. (World Citizen) http://youtu.be/5X6JULjj6hU Many versions of this track.

I have exactly same opinion. Music only has value if you ascribe a personal worth to it.
