How does the perception of popular music vary from land to land?
#1
I am always interested in this point ......................

It seems that things we take for granted may not be...............

When one looks at MD and see the stories that occur on it and the people involved, one begins to see that we all share a difference in the perception of who is a great or who is famous or known in certain musical fields.........

It is always interesting to do some background work on some of the people who are mentioned on MD and to find that whilst some members might regard this person as a bedrock of a particular genre.................others may be only vaguely antiquated.

Do we all share a core of people who are at the centre of the various branches of popular music or are we actually less united in this view than we believe?Cool

Comments............................
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

i hope i understood your question correcty G-Man, if not please correct me.

i think that we all understand to a point who has had signifigant influence and achieved a lot in music regardless of the genre, but out of that we all find artists that we relate to either lyrically or musically, and its them we tend to research a bit more, if we find what we're looking for in
our research, we tend to allign ourselves in that direction.

eg: i can feel what Eminem says in his songs about his life because ive had similar experiences at times. yet, i say i dislike "rap" as a rule because it doesnt say what i need it to to gel with me and how i have felt.

hope i answered your question G-Man?????

I would not have a clue as to how to answer this. Not sure I even understand the question. Each one of us can listen to the excat same piece of music in the same listening environment and each have a different opinion about what they hear.

^^ LMAO (MH).

I'd agree with Crazy-Man, up to a point. In the West, we all share some degree of cultural reference points, and our own tastes and experiences lead us to explore different strands of music, and develop our own set of tastes.

However, what about locations around the world who don't have access to Western music. There are plenty of places that only know their own indigenous music. Africa and Asia are the prime areas, I'd guess.

National barriers also play a part. I don't know if it's true of all French radio, but I've heard of one French station that has to play one French record to every two english language records.

My point arose because of the following observation

I think we all to a certain extent assume that as people around he world interested seriously in music that our reference points on its history and the important players should have some degree of overlap................

However, when studying "our" comments and reactions to postings it becomes clear to me that we make a great many assumptions here that maybe are not true.

Often I will post about an artist who my my reference points has been quite significant, within my experience of music and has had quite an effect and find that else where in the world this person or group has had little impact or their impact has been different..........

I also find this , other members post about artists that I have not really heard of or perceive as having had little to do with my sphere of musical influence.................however , after a little bit of research I find out via the available facts that my assessment has been hasty and they have played a part that up until now I have not really appreciated. This i find I have broadened my horizons and learnt a little more and perhaps view things in a better light now.:biggrin1:Cool

That's the beauty of a site like this. There are a number of people on MD whose musical preferences lead me to have a degree of trust in their tastes. When they enthuse about an artist I'm not familiar with, that trust will push me to investigate more readily.

Without you Griff, I may not have encountered either Magna Carta, or Gryphon. MH & Crazy-Man have put me onto Creedence Clearwater Revival. I'm still getting familiar with numerous recommendations from members of MD Mk. 1.

So, a resounding thanks from me to MD, and to you lot...

Does this also imply that we all live a little too much in our musical comfort zones are a bit afraid to wander too far out of them and explore other areas ?????:fencing:
