How does the perception of popular music vary from land to land?
#11
youre correct IMO G-Man, i think most of us have learned and/or gained knowledge of other artists we may not have had any interest in prior to joining the site....
the main reason i came here was to gain new artists to listen to and hopefully encourage others to possibly tune in to ones i like.

and this site works only if members are willing to share what they know and willing to accept others opinions without prejudice

I think it's only natural that we each have our own preferences based on what we've explored or been exposed to. But the fact that we're all here exchanging opinions and seeking recommendations would suggest that we've got something right...

We have very little exposure to European artists here. Canada and I think Eastern Canada in particular are influenced by what Americans are predominantly into. Rap, hip hop, electro dance to name a few. Country music is very huge over here in the Maritmes as well as Celtic music because of our Irish/Scottish ancestory.

I read an article stating that per capita North Americans in general rated very low percentage wise as far as heavy metal goes. Just look at the various festivals Wacken, etc. that go on in Europe ! I know people here in Nova Scotia that attend the European festivals every year.

I'm probably way off base regarding your question, Gryph. But I think this is one example - Paul Weller -very big in the UK but unheard of over here. I learned about him because Crazy -Horse mentioned him. MD is a great music information centre.

What I'm trying to get across is that the general public music audience is into Lady GaGa, ACDC, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Stones,Metallica, etc. but the lesser known bands are ignored because unless you're really into music and devote the time to research and investigate new music you only listen to what's popular for the moment and what's on MTV and the radio.I like Opeth and when I mention them to my co workers, acquaitances or friends they don't have a clue.

In closing I think in general that most of us have a grasp on who the music legends are.

By the way SteveO, found one of the Ryuichi Sakomoto CD's - 'moto.tronic' - quite a diverse selection on it.

SteveO I'm not so sure that your comments on the music legends are correct............

I'll give an example or two

Whilst I lived in the UK I believe that in the competition between The Stones and The Beatles there was not much in it in the 60s. Maybe he Beatles had the upper hand.................Move across to Europe and the situation if different.............The Stones are clear favorites and the Beatles are second...............Even the question of THe Beatles contributions to inovation and recording technology motivation is noit so clae cut.

The second example is to do with "Brit Pop" basically Oasis and Blur plus the associated groups......In the UK the perception of where this came from was pretty clear cut and most fans here in Europe could point to the Godfathers of such a sound. However it was news to N America that there were origins of this sound other than the ones that they thought ..............This has lead to The Kinks getting the recognition that they deserved for their work in the 60s and 70s that were eclipsed by a ather unforunate N. American ban due to their behavioral problems........................So I don't think it is as clear cut as you imagine .................there ae plenty of unsung heroes who have made great contributions to Rock and beyond but due to the cultural and geographic pertibations that happen not all the contributos are recognized some are masked by the position in the globe from which you view the situation
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

So in general you agree with me, right Gryph ? lol

All I know is my locale and in Halifax, Paul McCartney outdrew the Stones by 20,000 fans. Probably 300 or 3000 miles away the opposite may be true.
