Interested in Jazz.
#1
Hey everyone, I'm a new member to the forum and I was wondering if you could direct me to some good jazz musicians/bands. I've always been interested in listening to Jazz, just have never really found the time to search for the artists.

Also, Charlie Parker, Modern Jazz Quartet/Milt Jackson, Dave Brubeck, Sonny Rollins, and if vocal Jazz/Blues is your bag the divine Billie Holiday.

In addition to above mentions highly recommend the likes of Bill Evans, Kenny Garrett, Pat Metheny, Duke Ellington & Thelonious Monk.

You'll notice vocal jazz isnt really my thing..

If you like singers & standards: Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday + he's not really a "great" but I totally love Kurt Elling :-)

If you like instrumental stuff beware 'cos it varies a lot by the decade. I'd recommend something like:

A Charlie Parker compilation with "Barbados", "ornithology" and "Donna Lee" on it,
Miles Davis either "Miles Ahead" or "Kind of Blue"
Roland Kirk "Kirk's Work'
Weather Report "Black Magic"
and Polar Bear "Dim Lit"...

That's a good enough mix of the decades, the greats and my personal taste I think:-) There's a really exciting journey waiting for you in jazz listening!

If you want a different jazz experience then try the ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) artists and you may be surprised.

Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, Chic Corea, Gary Burton, Ralph Towner, Kenny Wheeler, ...just to get you started.

Enjoy your journey into Jazz !
