I am trying to find out which bands became big relatively quickly. By this I mean that they had limited musical background and ended up becoming big fast, or is this just some rumor that bands make it big overnight?

I wonder about this ...............is it a mirage that bands make it over night ? There must be some ad I can name one or two who might have become "famous" through things like X factor etc................
However, I regard myself as something of a musicologist and like to go into the background of bands and their origins..............In doing this one if often rewarded with earlier incarnations of bands or an insight into the small bands hat come together into bigger ones ...........eg band family trees ...................It seems rare that someone just starts ...................

No such thing as an overnight success - One hit wonders sure - but even one-hit wonders have to work at their trade/material. The only possible ones are the manufactured ones. i.e. where the band simply plays something somebody else has written and even then they had to learn how to play and then how to play together as well. That does not happen overnight. However there might be a 'band' (vocal group)that sings somebody else's material but does not play any instruments. I do believe however that there are solo performers who have become overnight success stories.

Arctic Monkeys spring to mind. Think they'd been together 2 or 3 years, before releasing a debut album that was the fastest selling debut for a UK band ever.
Sounds pretty overnight to me, and they're a great band...

No doubt countless others ! I guess it depends on what you define " overnight " as ! A day, a week, a month, etc.?
I can't think of any off the top of my head, except maybe Cream, how long were Clapton, Bruce and Baker together before the release of classic mega "hit" - Sunshine of Your Love ? They seemed to come out of the blue as no one over here knew about them until SOYL ?

oasis? 50,000 sales in the first week of their debut album.
Cage the Elephant got pretty known from their one song, 'Ain't no rest for the wicked'. Unfortunately that's all they're widely known for, but I think they'll still grow.

Odd case this might qualify................The BBC set out to try and create a star...........She was the person in question and at the end of it they did manage to project her into the domestic charts .............after that she enjoyed success for quite a while and even featured in the US!
