Like mike, I struggle to pick a definitive answer as I listen to lots of music from each decade. But if I had to pick, I would say 90s.

60's for sure

Ah.. I'd have to say 90s.

80's because even though there was some super TRASHy stuff, there was a lot of experimentation with electronics and new styles of music.

This is a tough one for me, I like almost all rock music but a lot more from the 60s and 70s. I voted in as 70s because the music seems to have matured and grown out of it's roots in blues, which is a completely different genre for me.

i have pondeered over this one since i came to the site and i cant answer it,sorry!, every decade has brilliant music, also has some real crappy music.
without elvis, chuck and little richard...thered have been no beatles and no british invasion etc without blues, thered have been no clapton, stones, led zep etc without buddy holly double tracking his voice, there may not be the studio trickery as early as we got it etd without neil young there might not have been nirvanna, pearl jam etc all of whom influenced someone else,so i guess no decade can be said to be the best, music isnt as black and white as that
"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..." - Me 2014.

Much too hard, I love the Hardcore scene from late 70s early 80s, but I also love love Proto-Metal from the late 60s and so on.... So I cannot decide.

70s, the best and worst.
Much freedom to express the best and worst. Genius and also pretension galore.

but like most people, I'm influenced by the era I grew up in. My older sisters listened to crooners like Johnny Ray and Perry Como, and I still like to hear that kind of music occasionally. I even got in on some late big band and early guitar pioneers like Les Paul (How High the Moon is still a favorite.)
But if you're a child of the 60s, it's always going to be the music of the 60s. There was so much experimentation and ferment going on then musically, from folk to folk rock to acid rock to the Beatles and many others. Despite the social unrest and turmoil of that time, one silver lining was the freshness and inventiveness of the music. I loved We Five and The Left Banke and Mary Hopkin, the Doors, Cream, the Who, the Animals, and the Youngbloods to name a few. Get Together was as popular in Vietnam when I was there as it was in the USA. Sad to say, I find very little inventive or worthwhile in pop music in the US today, and most of my listening is to foreign groups. |
