composed by Paul Simon in 1969 in one of those WTF moments of "where did that come from?" comments by its composer...
it is spiritual, Gospel and ethereal yet at the same time none of those things.
its one of those songs that has the capability to move your soul on so many different levels,
to be fair i dont think i have ever heard a bad version of this song but the original featuring the vocals of Art Garfunkel lifts the song to a level that few other songs both musically, lyrically and vocally can emulate, a masterpiece/masterstroke of a composition IMO and well and truly worthy of inclusion in my list (and probably all of yours too if you really thought about it)

BTW when Art & Paul did 'The Concert in Central Park', BOTW was hands down the standout track of the evening. Sends a chill down your spine and your balls into orbit...

"annie's song"

this one was written in 1973, the basic melody and lyrics were composed in John Denver's head whilst on a ski lift in Aspen....
to Denver it was a initially a prayer but it evolved into one of the most gorgeous love songs ever written IMO.
and when you think about it the song does have an almost prayer-like quality about it and it would be so easy to imagine this being sung in church alongside 'bridge over troubled water' (anyone see a purely subliminal theme developing here apart from me??)
to be honest, i cannot recall ever hearing any one else sing this other the magnificent John Denver so here it is for your aural pleasure today...

lets not forget that this list is about "the song" as a song, and NOT about a particular version, however i will continue to post the version i consider to the the greatest version of the song (the version that does the song the justice it fully and rightfully deserves)
country tinged track written by husband and wife songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil in oe around 1969.
what a gorgeous love song,
some totally original lines here which make it truly one of a kind writing, lines like referring to the way he believes her, how the love interest's smile reminds him of a foggy morning, and how this time she is going to stay, awesome stuff...
i have heard several versions of this song including Bobby Vee, Vince Gill, BJ Thomas' original and all (including Gill's are really good) but the best version ever has to be Elvis Presley's 1970 emotion drenched version which wins hands down IMO
i think all three of you mentioned Elvis and although not written specifically for him i will accept your guesses as being correct.

Oh of course - must be Elvis's best track by far. Many moons ago a friend of my father's was terminally ill with cancer. His wife had died only a few months earlier and in his final days in hospital he listened to this track over and over. They had actually installed a turntable, amplifier and speakers next to his bed. I was just a kid at the time but it made a big impression on me.
