"Progressive" Music
#1
So we all know what 'prog' music is. We all know what progressive rock is.
My attention is focusing on something else. In history, I am doing a project on new age Progressivism, focusing mainly on music of the new frontier. What will the future of music will look like? What is "progressive" music now (and i don't just mean prog rock or techno, i mean anything that you believe will be the new wave, or is the new wave).
What do you think it is?

Everyone's opinion on this is different, and I want to hear everyone's take.

I believe in the next ten years the jam band scene is truly going to come out and we will have a new era like the sixties happen in terms of music.

that's how i see it too, rock really coming back... emo is finally dispersing, and rap/hip-hop is slowly fading, slowly but surely... even look at American Idol, their leaning towards rock and a little less of pop... they've always been into r&b and blues i guess, just a better way for rock.

I need some clarification on the question. Do you want to know what I think is an example of someone pushing the envelope right now? Music that is progressive in that its doing something new and innovative? Or do you want to know what I think will be popular in the near future?

It seems the two people who have replied so far choose the second option. And (in my opinion) their answer is heavily biased towards what music they like right now. I seriously doubt jam bands will ever become mainstream.

I am a bit lost on this thread as well. 'coordinatednoise' if you can clarify the question, then I am sure we can provide a good discussion to this.

I second JonG, that I don't believe that jam bands will ever become mainsteam.

I actually would like to hear both responses, but I don't want to know just what you like. I want to know what bands you think are pioneering and their styles will be the style of the future. What you think in 10 years will be playing in everyones cars. It can be a genre or a band but just what you really think is the new 'wave' of music.

Hope that clarifies it!

Okay, this is what I see happening. It is already happening some, but I see it continuing and growing. For a while now in the past tens years we've seen music styles splinter more and more. Subgenres of sub-genres. It's gotten unbearable. (No, no these two artists aren't the same. X uses feedback while Y is clean. Their melodies are the same but the sounds are totally different.)

Now there are many artists that combine styles. They take what they like from rock, disco, soul and rap and mash it into something new. I see this in pop music by Gnarls Barkley and Timbaland's productions. I see it in the underground (or not so underground) in New York by artists like LCD Soundsystem. A movement that brings people together.

Everything old is new again...especially including a tendency to the totally-controlled middle, in thrall to the managers/ execs/ programmers, you know, those who shape careers. American pop just before the Beatles and Stones blew it apart, anyone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNuX7bs2qAM << I actually like this harmonizing by these high-style sisters but how much of this did they shape? Another? Sure.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0kd-w7Xwd8 << You know how you escaped this pop-pap trap? "Race music" is how--Amos Milburn and his ilk, is how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0rkwIPQPYo << From the magnificent Aladdin Sessions CD (BTW, that cover picture? If Mr.Milburn et cie.even expressed a thought, the "party" would've been a lynch mob. Talk about deceitful, cynical attempt to appeal to a, shall we say, "cross-over" audience! Lawsa mercy, child!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GvfIx_-Xm4 << this'll get anybody's blood pumping--imagine yourself an Eisenhower-era Cauc kid coming on this stuff...

Sadly I believe we are going to be subjected to more crap like K-POP in the future. Music is becoming more insipid by the minute.
Take money out of the equation and we might just get back to real creativity but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
