Former "Britain's Got Talent" contestant Susan Boyle made a record-breaking debut on Sunday's new U.K. chart with her debut album "I Dreamed a Dream" (Syco Music/Sony Music Entertainment).

It sold 410,000 units to become Britain's fastest-selling album of 2009 and recorded the biggest first-week sales of any album in U.K. chart history, according to Official Charts Company data.

The Scottish singer also scored a top ten single with the album's first release, her cover of the Jagger/Richards song "Wild Horses," which opened at No. 9. Comedian Peter Kay and his All Star Band's "Official Children In Need Medley" (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment), which raises funds for the BBC charity of that name, leapt 18-1 on the singles survey.

Tough call.

Although soaring Broadway voices aren't really my thing, I think she's plenty good.

I think the gimmicky, freak-show angle is kind of a sad commentary on the music biz: "Old matronly woman who sings like an angel." Anybody who's seen their local church choir knows there are some who do, and some who don't. And anybody who's heard Britney, J Lo, or heard Marilyn sing "Happy Birthday" to JFK knows that sexiness doesn't guarantee outstanding vocal quality. So why so much shock and awe?

I also don't like what seems to be the media's implication that so-called ugly ducklings need to "prove" their worth by breaking out their secret talent and sticking it to the world. A obscure life spent taking care of her mother, the sick people in her parish, and singing in the local choir is no less applaudable than the life of your average pop diva, and can be rewarding in its own way.

Although I'm glad she'll have money to take care of herself and her loved ones, it's hard to be sure whether this is necessarily a good thing or not. While it's nice for some to think that this will inspire people, make them reconsider their preconceptions and so on, I'm a bit cynical, and tend to see it as more reality-show style entertainment.

Interesting discussion, though. I hope some of you will jump in on this one.

I can't see this ending happily for the poor woman. There have already been rumours which question her mental state, & I just hope the music "industry" will do right by her if it all goes tits-up...

Not knocking her singing ability at all. I think she has a beautiful voice. Just the way the media is all "Wow, an older not beautiful woman can sing!!!" I wish her all the luck. I just despise the media coverage of her.

Let's say I have much more respect for Susan Boyle than Lady Ga-Ga.

Not sure of ambers take on this. Are you saying she doesn't deseve the accolades?

This is Simon Cowell hype, which he is brilliant at. He knows how to engineer the press, use the internet to advertise (particularly youtube), and how to build up a public perception.

She is a good singer no doubt, but the only reason she is selling big is because of the perception left from 'Britain's Got Talent' and Simon Cowell who basically owns her.

Also as Tiggi mentioned, her mental state. From past events, we can say that Cowell will drop Susan Boyle when the public start to loose interest. How will she be then?

I think that the message that the success and "craze" of Susan Boyle sends is that a person does not have to fit a celebrity stereotype to be beautiful. Her voice and her persistence is what makes her beautiful, not some artificial standard.
