Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass - Whipped Cream & Other Delights - 1965 - **



One of the most successful instrumental performers in pop history, with over 30 albums to their credit, A&M records co-founder Herb Alpert dominated the genre in the 60's. Of course when you own your own record company, it's not hard to decide whether to release you're own material. This album hit the top of the charts in 1965, netting 3 grammy awards. The title track also became the theme music for the popular Dating Game tv show. Although later in his career, Herb developed a day job as a solo artist, his recordings with the Brass are the highlight.

Angel Taylor - Love Travels - 2009 - **



Mostly acoustic material for the coffee shop audience, with a bit of macho thrown in, along with some decent ballads. She would actually be comfortable in many genres. Very good self penned lyrics. This is her debut album and well worth a follow up. Tracy Chapman comes to mind, style not voice.

I like this album.

Kenny Rogers - Love Will Turn You Around - 1982 - **



Earlier in his career Kenny would be in the country genre, but not by now. Not much country about this release. Even earlier of course was the First Edition and the New Christy Minstrels. Kenny has found success where ever he turned. Although this album only reached #34 on the Billboard charts, there is some decent material. The title track did reach #1 on the country charts, even though it's borderline country at best to me. But hey, what do I know? And of course no clip for my fav.

I like this album.

5th Dimension - Up Up And Away - 1967



Debut album from these hippie r&b'ers who all grew up in St. Louis then all moved to Southern California independently of each other. Discovered by none other than Johnny Rivers who signed them to his newly created Soul City Records. Aided by the up and coming Jimmy Webb, the album reached #8 on Billboard and the single of Webb's Up Up And Away reached #7 and won a Grammy for best record of the year and best song of the year. A cover of the Mamas and Papas Go Where You Wanna Go also charted well. The groups sound amazingly alike on that and also on track #2. Being the weirdo that I am, I wasn't crazy about either of those singles but chose as my favorite another much mellower Jimmy Webb composition, which of course there is no clip for.

I like this album.

Major label debut from New York boy band, formed in high school. Saw something comparing them to Jonas Brothers. They better shake that label. Then again maybe they don't want to. Only thing I'm sure of, they won't be on my list.

i have been listening to Peace at Last, the debut album from former a1 member mark read.

its a fantastic little album, self penned and well worth checking out.

favourite tracks are cat out of the bag, your world moves faster, last kiss, and owe it all to you.

the third single from it, called fallen from grace, is actually out on the 26th october, and deals with the times everyone has, when it feels like things cant get any worse and then someone else comes and gives you a good kick lol

Daryl Hall / John Oates - Big Bam Boom - 1984



Philly popsters back with their 12th studio album. Even though this album charted at #6, it was the beginning of the decline. It would be 4 years till the next effort. This album seems a little heavier on the production side than recent releases. Method Of Modern Love was the key single, which gave us that spelling lesson. Never could figure out why they didn't spell out modern. Overall the album holds up well for me with over half of the tracks getting a nod. Of course with only 9 tracks total, that don't take much. Let me get out my calculator. Let's see now, 9 minus 4 equals 5. Yep, that's more than half.

I like this album.

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - What Now My Love - 1966



This would be their 5th album which stayed at number 1 for nine weeks, with the title track reaching #24 and #2 on AC chart. Hard to believe for me that an instrumental album could perform that well. Surely not in todays market. The originals are the best for me. The rest is elevator music. Hate instrumentals of popular songs as I am always struggling for the words, which I know I knew at some point. Nothing here that sticks to you like on previous albums.

I do not like this album.

Come on label. Is that the best cover idea you could come up with? I know, I know, it's supposed to be about the music, but seriously! Upstate NY band formed in 2005. This is their second album. Kinda bland for me. Move over boy bands.
