TOM JONES "detroit city" B/W "if i had you" 1967
im a huge fan of Tom Jones...just about everything he did in his early career would get a 'love it' rating from me, well,
except that stupid "whats new pussycat" song...man i hate that one with a passion, its cringeworthy...!
but yeh, "detroit city" was actually a cover of a country song from the early 1960s(just cant recall who recorded it first)...jazzbo will find it, im sure!
"B" side, another great vocal performance from "the coalminer's son"(see loretta, youre not the only one...lol!)
single peaked at
#3 in the UK

MISSING PERSONS "words" B/W "i like boys" 1982
when i pulled this one out the box i initially thought...
what the hell is this?
after i played it i realised why i couldnt remember it, because i hated it with a passion, and probably back in '82 also...lol.
i dont like either side of this single by this NY 'new wave/rock' outfit...
but it did make it to
#9 in Australia, so i guess a lot of people liked it back in the day including my dad!

I'm almost certain Bobby Bare did Detroit City. Dean Martin sang it too. He did a great job on the song.
My Grandma had a huge crush on Tom Jones

Thanks for that"double-L".....
Since you mentioned it, I do recall Deano singing it...
I now remember Dolly Parton also, from the same period as 'nine to five'...

I've always liked Bobby Bare. That's how I knew and it being Country too.
