You have to take account of my age, 73, and the fact I was a late arrival on the planet in 1946..
My father played for St Kilda early to mid 1940’s so I never attented a game he played in.
Didn’t stop him dragging me along every saturday during the season though.

I suspect one of the reasons I was turned off the game was the transformation that overtook
my mother at matches. A dignified woman who normally never allowed swearing in her company turned
into a screaming, foul-mouthed monster at matches actually getting into a punch up with another
‘lady’ supporter at one match. My uncles, who were pretty rough themselves, refused to attend games
with her.

Wandering off topic here but I’m enjoying watching women’s AFL now. A very different game from the mens. The skill level is important but there’s far less of the deliberate brutality and planned injuring of opposition players as in the men’s game.

Oh I remember playing rugby at junior school level and the mothers coming along to support their little darlings totally smashed on Brandy and Coke. I kid you not.

Phew! That was a nail biting game to begin with, and a bit messy. A very nervous SA vs Japan. Feel a bit sorry for Japan - not nice to lose on home ground. Not that sorry though  Big Grin .

Who knows? if the Springboks listen to their very clever coach, stick to the game plan, AND stay focused, we may stand a fighting chance at the big win, providing we don't lose the plot against Wales, of course!  Rolleyes
