A little late to this party, but I just want to say that I agree entirely. I had been searching for a good music forum for about a year or two and tried probably about 5-6 before finding Music-Discussion. There was always something going on at the other ones where I just couldn't stand it. MD is honestly the best I've found. Knowledgable, friendly, and open-minded posters. One of the true good places. Also agree with this entirely.

me, im pretty knowledgeable with artists like Neil Young,Paul McCartney,Paul Weller,Elvis Costello,Nick Cave,Finn Brothers etc...all totally different artists in their own right!

Music Head is very good with his knowledge on country(mainly real country),rock, and also Alternative as well as Bob Dylan to name a few

SteveO seems to be quite adept in a lot of real Metal, hard rock,Beatles and most things Canadian

evilB i havent quite worked him out as yet but he does have great allround knowledge of music(help me out here evil guy?!)

Jerome, very heavily into all things Prog, especially Pink Floyd, loves his Jarre,Mike Oldfield,Vangelis and all things experimental...has a passion for unusual instruments and sounds and dare i say is quite clever when it comes to recording/studio techniques as he does his own recording also.

jazzbo again, havent worked him out yet neither but he also has a good allround knowledge of music

Aw man, didn't even make it onto the list of regulars. Guess I have a new goal to strive for now. Wink

Interesting that you choose those bands and that wording. Not that there's anything wrong with them or anything, but I feel like they're going in a totally different direction than "keeping rock's home fires burning." Sure they're still classified as rock, but, I feel like they've definitely got a sound that is super distinguishable from the heavier sounds that a lot of people still associate with rock. I think there's definitely a lot of bands in that style. The bands you listed all seem much more progressive (not in a prog-rock sort of way, but in a "evolving genre" sort of way). I could just be reading much too into it though.

I am not deliberately obscure and have made it a point to say I'm mainly MOBO (= Music of Black Origin) but try to leave myself open to anything that's brought to my attention from whatever source derived (as the taxman says about taxable income). As I posted in another Thread in another Forum, if you want something different in rock or a different take on the familiar: 1) try Rock en Espanol via http://radio.batanga.com/#!en/genres << they appreciate the forms and formats without being burdened by the history. The same is true of other genres from the North they cover, and 2) cruise through YouTube, plugging in your fave tunes to see who else did it. The results may astonish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFHQRAp2sdM << It works the other way 'round as well--familiar artists doing WTF schiz (haven't heard any hard-core folks doing Broadway show tunes but it's not outside the realm of possibility). Too often, we don't lock others out--we lock ourselves in.
A man accustomed to hear only the echo of his own sentiments, soon bars all the common avenues of delight, and has no part in the general gratification of mankind--Dr. Johnson
What he said. Amen, Bro--JazzboCR
