Terry Stafford – singer/songwriter who died this day in 1996 at 55. He’s responsible for bringing ‘Suspicion’ to popularity, initially - covering the song which had been written for Elvis and which was first recorded by Elvis in 1962. Stafford’s version hit the US top ten in 1964 going to #6 while the Beatles held all of the first five places. Elvis subsequently got to #9 in the UK with the song, in 1976. Great share. I'm OK with calling it R&B but most call it "soul music" or closer to the bone, "smooth" or romantic soul. * Not all that well known in the Cauc world but I guarantee every Black woman of a certain age has 1 or more CDs by him (and/or Teddy Pendergrass and/or the other Luther, Vandross). Their music helped a lot of African-American women bear the strains of a day, the monthly miseries, a life. I know this is fact as I worked with and had the trust of quite a few Black women in the Postal Service and they told me so.

* All this may be churlish semantics but I feel R&B has a rawer, more gritty sound and feel--emphasizes the Blues part of this overall genre. Soul tends more towards the orchestral. I'm likely guilty of overthinking...again.
