^ I couldn't agree with you more Zeus !!!! Pink Floyd was some what non commercial and they could pack them in! Any other rare examples of artists that created their own music that or is not pinned to a certain genre? Bob Dylan would be another one...I am sure there are many more!

If I can be tacky picky-picky about the higlhlighted word> Oh, how I wish. To have the strength and the musical ability to overcome nearly-overwhelming odds, and find an audience is a rare thing indeed. My candidate would be Neil Young. He hasn't done much that he didn't want to do. This segment/hijacking of the Thread is necessarily about those who can follow their muse(s) and also move the merch.
Now back to Ambient Pop...

"He Loved Him Madly" (from Get Up with It), about which Eno wrote, "that piece seemed to have the 'spacious' quality that I was after...it became a touchstone to which I returned frequently."
Beautiful ambient piece! Miles' tribute to Duke Ellington!

The king of bands that defied labels is Steely Dan!!! Those guys managed to be everywhere and nowhere in particular, and they're still around!
Jerome, I am very very sad to report that I just can't find a connect with the Eno albums. I'm so sad, but I'm going to keep them in my play list and return at another time to see if that hasn't changed. I do, however, really like The Bride Stripped Bare (and I like the story behind it even more!).
Steve O, I'm not digging this Miles deviation from the "norm." Darn it. However, as with Eno, I'm going to keep this and see if maybe I'll like it more at a different moment in my life, 'cause I love love love Miles!!!
I really enjoyed the Liquid Coincidence 5 video that R_Burke posted!!! I like that Middle Eastern sound that comes from the chanting mixed with that ethereal space quality. It's very relaxing!

Howzabout some Dead Can Dance ? (aforementioned Lisa Gerrard , with another very fine vocalist, Brendan Perry ) (too lazy/busy to link) . Lotsa mid-eastern-ish , hypnotic music from them to be had.
There's some good psychedelic music floating around too; I don't like the hard stuff, Goa or Trance , but more like Psy-Chill or Downtempo . There's a lot of miss and only an occasional hit when I go (you)tubing . There's a lot of very boring (too ambient) music in these areas, and a lot that's way to frenetic , and only a very little bit that's just rioght (for me) .

No sweat - I should have read your post a little more carefully - I missed the 'pop' part and only saw ambient. Hence the link to Eno.
Here's one that is neither pop nor ambient - in fact I don't really know where it fits in at all! http://auralscapes.com/ Still a bit of work left on this one - almost there. A bit of tidying up and volume levels to be sorted out on various instruments.

Big shout-out to ZeusMoose for pointing us to Dead Can Dance. Hypnotic and sometimes ethereal, but you can move your booty to it too. Beautiful voices, superior playing--Arabic/ Middle Eastern modes and motifs to these tired old ears. Here's one with interview snippets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itwL5y0He-k Some others: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJqUbb-WuPQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufX5UDr2MSU << You can talk about their music without descending into psychobabble--a tough trick with this genre. There are some concerts/ full albums available on YouTube--always a nicety and a mark that they have true and deep fans.

No worries, Jerome! I'll give everything a listen, and who knows, maybe there will be a point at which I really like Eno's music! I'm trying to listen to your music, but I think there's either a problem with my wifi or the link because it's being interrupted every 2-3 seconds. Any suggestions for what I can do on my end?

(something is wacky with the "reply with quote" feature, so I'm writing two separate replies, sorry guys!)
Steve O, I can't believe you posted the "We are Free" video! I just saw Gladiator for the first time a few weeks ago (I know, I know...I'm painfully behind in a lot of things, not just music *laughs*), and wept at the end when I heard that song! How lovely to hear it again! I'm going to listen to some DCD, thank you Zeus and jazzboCR for the suggestions and the links!!
