I do think the Beatles and Stones were more marketable around the
world with their music also the other awesome groups from UK.
i agree with you suzy7....
bands like Small Faces,Kinks,Who,Traffic were totally absorbed in 'english culture',thus were less well recieved in places like the US,however they were hugely popular in countries like Canada and here in Australia, probably due to the large English populations(being part of the 'British Commonwealth')...
you'll find the same thing nowadays with groups/artists who are uniquely english like Paul Weller,The Jam,Clash,Sex Pistols,Blur,Oasis,Billy Bragg,Madness,Ian Dury,Specials,The Beat etc etc.... who have an "english" sound, outlook in their songs...they would not be popular in the US for extended periods...the same thing goes for "uniquely" US artists...the so-called "americana" groups like Band Of Horses,Gaslight Anthem,My Morning Jacket,Alabama Shakes, etc etc.... and most country artists also...very few are actually popular outside the US,
you'll find ALL countries have artists who are equally as good as major worldwide acts but dont get the international recognition they deserve, its pure logistics, circumstance and location...we have had numerous artists here who are as good as any anywhere but they fit into the above catagory....take Split Enz,Neil and Tim Finn, Midnight Oil,Goanna Band,James Bludell,Slim Dusty etc etc....
hey,
and thanks for starting an interesting thread on the merit of The Who

Lennon singing Imagine was ill conceived as well - I mean the verse they choose is 'Imagine there's no countries...' in the middle of the largest gathering of people from different countries you will ever see.
Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' turned into a limp-wristed performance. Don't even get me started about the Old Spice Girls - music at it's very worst. TT was just verbal diarrhea.
Don't get me wrong - the organization od the games was well executed. But they really need to look at the music they chose and who was chosen to sing/perform as well. That was bloody awful. The only two who made any sort of impact was Annie Lennox and the Welsh/English Choir. The rest was rubbish.
i understand where you're coming from with the Lennon verse Jerome...but i looked at it from another perspective...
"imagine theres no countries...etc",
i took it as meaning there are no countries, boundaries at the Olympics, meaning everyone is there from 164 countries "under one flag and unified",sure, they represent their individual flags/nations but also they came together for a common cause and put aside their political and social differences for two weeks.
my question is,
if they can do that for sport, then why cant they do that for the good of humanity everyday of every year and stop conflict, persecution ans social injustice??
maybe you can answer that, afterall you did grow up in a country that was renowned for those injustices for a long long time(not saying you agreed with aparthied, but you had to live through it and witnessed it from the inside whether it affected you personally or not)..and Australia had sort of an aparthied system also until the late 1960s also, but i wasnt here then and can only read about it.

You are right, so much talent world wide that gets no credit.

I missed the closing because I was on a coach. but i would have loved to have seen the Who. I have seen Kenny Jones, who played drums with them for a bit a few times in his new band-the Jones Gang.

There are thousands of bands available to listen to !!!!! I am always discovering new music from recommendations on MD, other medium and friends.
This past week I listened to five albums by metal bands and was very pleased. AllMusic gave the albums 4.5 - 5 stars so I knew they had to be half descent and they were!
CONVERGE, MACHINE HEAD, ELECTRIC WIZARD, NAPALM DEATH and I really loved a live album by ..yes sirre - SLIPKNOT !!!!

Yes I knew the Stones declined ...but they could have had a song of theirs played somehow by another band or at least a sound bite !!!!!
Totally ridiculous IMHO !!!!!...I equate this to ignoring Neil Young if Canada staged a tribute to Canadian music !!!!!....Neil's at the top IMHO !
